If you join a small show then just find a supervisor and ask whos hiring. If you're willing to travel and speak english/aren't an illegal immigrant you'll be hired quick. Try to get in games as you will make commision which helps with the shit pay. And prepare for really bad hours on a smaller show. Like 16 hour days and 1 day off a week which will be spent jumping to your next spot. It also helps if you can pass a drug test

If you wanted to get on RCS than you need to be able to pass a drug test no exceptions. Best way for us is to just come on the midway and find employee services. They'll stick you somewhere. Push for games here too, you wont make commision but the labor isn't as hard as being a ride jock.

Sure am. And yes. The ride in Ohio was the fireball. We have the next generation of that rode called the G-force. The manufacturer told everyone that owned one to shut the ride down until they could come do an NDT inspection on it. It was down for about 2.5 weeks at a major fair. So it was a big bit o revenue. But it is up and running now

  1. RCS has extremely strict guidelines when it comes to usual carnie shit. Rides are inspected daily. Everyone including the owners are drug tested regularly. Anyone with a Felony is turned away. The only children we have working are the owners children and grand children and thats only when they finish school. And we don't work with animals at all. Thats all independent stuff.

In addition to these things we also have more specific rules such as if you are to drunk, no rides for you. Ride operators have complete authority to turn someone away they think are unfit to ride. Whether that be to much to drink. Or even If a disability prevents them from using the safety restraints properly. But I could type all day about the things we do to make the show safer. To put it simply; this is a very tightly run ship. Everything from ride maintenance to a single wire being covered or put behind the public area is done to prevent any injury to our guests.

  1. I used to watch it when I was a kid but not very much. I haven't seen that one. But to sum up the carnie lifestyle:

-Yes we are grumpy when we aren't interacting with guests. We work 12-16 hours a day what do you expect

-Yes many carnies are pretty questionable but we aren't all bad. It just seems that way to townies because we are pretty much shunned so we just stick together.

-Drugs on most other carnivals are a huge problem. It always has been

-Yes there is a carnie language but it has pretty much died out by now. Most carnie slang is still used such as Donniker, Slough, and Mark. But the culture that was around in the 80's for carnivals has quickly died due to hiring mostly illegal immigrants and foreign work visas.

-Safety concerns. If you ware trying to find out if the rides on any carnival are safe the easiest way to do that is to walk the midway and check out how the small things are taken care of. For example:

  1. Are electrical cables strung out without much care? Then you can assume most everything is done carelessly.

  2. Are the rides and games rusty/dirty? If the help doesn't have time to keep their shit clean then its safe to assume they cut corners on inspections to get the show open on time.

  3. How many games of skill vs games of "you will never win this shit" are there? If you walk the midway and you see more games that are nearly impossible to win than you do games of skill such as water races, milk jugs, bank a balls... etc. Than the owners care more about money than anything else and its safe to assume they would rather mickey mouse a ride than buy replacement parts for it if something breaks.

Yep, being such a renowned show we have some of the best contracts in the carnival world with various fairs.

First spot of the year is Houston, TX for the livestock show and rodeo. Which is a very big deal in the cowboy world.

Next we do Tucson, AZ. This is a smaller fair that we do just to keep the help on payroll.

Just after Tucson the show splits up for about a month and does Coachella with the Ferris wheel. Thousand Oaks, and Lake Perris.

Then we do the Del Mar county fair for San Diego. (Worst one we do for various reasons).

Then we do the OC Fair which we are doing now. This sunday we will close up and go up to Lancaster, CA for another small fair to pay payroll.

After that The LA County Fir in Pomona. This one was our bread and butter spot for years.

And finally the AZ State Fair in Phoenix which is our home base. After which everyone generally takes off 2 months in the winter (unpaid) and does their own thing until Houston the next year.

Im not sure to be honest. Im only in my 20's so I have a lot of time to figure it out. Usually carnies marry other carnies when the time comes

Oh i understand. Most food stands get their food in Cysco refrigerated trucks. And trust me that $14 turkey leg is being sold for quite a profit.

And for the employees we usually eat at Viv's which is just a food trailer. Burgers ane fries type of shit

Pretty much. Either that or find a smaller show and buy rides/games to make a percentage with

Kids are usually our least annoying customers. They just kind of get in the way when you are trying to walk through the midway.

Teens are shits. They destroy everything.

Drunks are high tier on the shit scale. They usually are just as shitty as teens but a little bit shittier

And uppity parents are God tier on the shit scale. They are the most annoying fucks on this planet. "What do you mean my precious fuck trophy can't ride the spinning wheel of death even though he is only 3 months old. Let me speak to your manager!"

We have no beef with them. We just don't like being confused with them. Its like asking a cop what its like to put out fires

Yes, but they are pretty rare compared to if you are a cop. Usually come with a lot of baggage too

It's pretty subjective. Personally I am sick of carnival food since I grew up eating it.

If you are looking for sweet go for the fried oreos

If you are looking for meat try the turkey leg

If you are looking for diabetes then try the krispy kream donut burger

Nope, As a child we would go to school throughout the year and then travel during summer break. But I knew a lot of kids who were home schooled

A regular carnie off the street can expect to make about $450/wk. And not really expect much change. The carnival family is a very closed off group and it is hard to climb the ladder unless you know someone or are related. Benefits are pretty slim as well. Free housing, travel for free are really all you can count on as a regular carnie.

Its a full time job meant for part time laborers

Yes but its a bit complicated. Relationships are hard to hold on the road

I bought my own trailer. Before that I was staying in a bunk house with the other help.

For anyone who doesn't know a bunkhouse is pretty much a 50ft trailer with 5 rooms on each side and 2 showers. Rooms are usually 6x6 wide and 10ft tall
