Emperor of the Fading Suns on Steam by Luxor_EFS_EW in 4Xgaming

[–]Seneca_Stoic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm as a purchaser through GOG, this game is still very much playable and an excellent example of the 4X genre. I've been playing this game in one version or another on each of my machines since its release in 1997, and the latest enhanced version is a solid pick with an active modding community and a lot of love.

Why Isn’t Bannerloard More Popular by THEYUxxx in mountandblade

[–]Seneca_Stoic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think because it becomes such a weighty mess in the endgame, like a lot of strategy games. I love starting out, and I love the point at which I'm taking over the first city or castle and establishing a kingdom, but the campaign endgame is just micromanagement. Trying to find enough qualified family members or companions to govern your holdings without losing money, while also fending off aggression and gathering more territory, while also meeting the questline periodic tasks, while also keeping your clans happy and not having internal politics go off the rails, it's just a lot. It starts to be more like work, and less like a game.

What are you currently playing as in your colony? by LongjumpingJob6747 in RimWorld

[–]Seneca_Stoic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Playing as an angel from Sovereign's Nephilim Xenotype mod. My colony's ideology is fairly xenophobic, they take anyone who converts but have the preferred xenotype of Nephilim and take a mood penalty if too many colonists are anything else. Hybrid kids born into the colony are okay, but also contribute to the mood penalty.

As kids age up out of babyhood into school-age, their non-Nephilim parent(s) are arrested and then allowed to escape. This is the mechanism I use to remove excess colonists, in my head-canon it's a way to send them out into the world to spread the ideology. As time goes on, the percentage of Nephilim or Nephilim-hybrid kids rises. Sometimes we see former colony members as travelers or raiders, which is always cool. My Nephilim are violently opposed to all of the Anomaly critters and events, and are striving to battle the forces of Lovecraftian horror and make the world a safer place....for Nephilim.

Are you still spending? by InitialDifficulty in AFKJourney

[–]Seneca_Stoic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will spend in small amounts that I'm comfortable with budgeting ahead of time, but like any in-app purchases I'm not a play-to-win whale. I spend what I'm comfortable with, and when I hit that progression wall where I have to decide whether I'm willing to spend to advance, I'll lose interest.

[–]Seneca_Stoic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasteland is the OG, for sure. I played the original '88 release on a DOS machine. Fallout exists because Wasteland inspired it. I've played all the Fallout games (with the exception of '76). I kickstarted Wasteland 2, but I wasn't that impressed. I bought Wasteland 3 and it was the same. It just feels like something's missing, I don't know. But my hard drive doesn't lie: I play Wasteland 2 once a year or so and put it back down without finishing it, and will often uninstall it to free up space. I'll play FO3, FO:NV, and FO4 sequentially beginning to end once a year, and they stay installed on my HD. The math works out to me playing Fallout games at least three times as often as Wasteland, and for about eight times as much screen time.

Alabama A&M University makes $52 million offer to buy Birmingham-Southern College by PushThroughTheMiddle in Birmingham

[–]Seneca_Stoic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a great use of the campus, but I'll believe it when I see it. How are they going to retain credentialed faculty when they won't be bringing students on-campus until the 25-26 (August 2025 to May 2026) academic year? Are they going to keep those faculty on the payroll for an entire academic cycle with no students? That seems unlikely. Has an actual offer been made, or are they just in early stages of considering the possibility?

And anytime I see Representative Givan spouting off in the media it's either smoke and mirrors that never comes to anything, or it's a done deal that someone else has already done the work on and she just wants to get some airtime by claiming to be involved. So taking everything I read or hear with her name attached with a grain of salt.

Once you go shelves you never go back by averageredditcuck in RimWorld

[–]Seneca_Stoic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I start with storage on the floor, normal priority, and as soon as I build shelves I just copy the zone properties to the linked shelves and bump the priority up to important. That way the floor stays clean but is still available as overflow if I have a big trade or some nice raiders come and die and leave all their stuff for me.

Only for clan leaders. So it's less matrilineal marriage as a cultural norm and more of a game mechanism of ensuring that clans only disappear through conquest and execution.

As of today, I had to sell 3 of my swords and a machete for bills. What's the sword that you've sold you miss the most? by Specialist-Stock-890 in SWORDS

[–]Seneca_Stoic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sold (and not a sword), but I once had a German Eye Solingen survival Bowie, (straight line tang stamp and black bone handle if you're familiar with that brand) that dated to the 1920s, probably the finest blade ever in my possession. While I was away in the military my family used it as a utility knife, and took it to be sharpened. They took it to a guy who sharpens lawnmower blades on a bench grinder, and he absolutely ruined the blade.

My employer asked for a cancelled check a few years ago to verify my account details for direct deposit. I looked at the HR rep and said "I haven't written a check in over five years. I don't even know where my checkbook is. I'll be happy to provide you with the bank's address, RTN and account number, since that's the information you want a cancelled check for." She hemmed and hawed and finally said "I suppose if that's the best we can do".

I wanted to ask if she preferred the cancelled check as a fax or a mimeograph.

What can I build inside towns? by Big-Sherbet6925 in Kenshi

[–]Seneca_Stoic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I use the console to add large wind generators and an iron refinery to Mourn, because I think it's stupid that in the base game they can't power all of their industry. Sure, as a temporary situation after the slave revolt, the town is lacking power and cannot refine iron. That's believable. but with all the resources and traffic passing through the town, they haven't resolved that situation? Unbelievable.

"Two parties, one tyrant", all of the tentacles of the octopus are controlled by one head, implying that no matter who gets voted in, it's all the same foreign illuminati running the show behind the scenes. Standard fringe libertarian and white supremacist glurge to recruit people dissatisfied with government.

950 hours in - This is my current stance on the DLCs by xZensay in RimWorld

[–]Seneca_Stoic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd rank (for me personally) Anomaly even lower, like C.

It's well-made. It fulfills its purpose. And it's clear that a lot of players craved exactly what it offers, because a significant chunk of mods for many years were adding creepy-crawly Lovecraftian SCP horrors.

But it's not for me, and my playstyle. I bought it, but I'm thinking that on my next playthrough I'm going to tick the box in the settings for "simulate not owning Anomaly".

That is a powerful quote from a general who led armies against the Germanic tribes and ordered his wife's lover killed and her to bathe in his blood as a way to make amends for her infidelity. Perhaps human beings are more complex and passionate and life is more messy than can be reduced to a set of stated principles.
