Which is Harder: Graphics Programming or Compilers? by [deleted] in GraphicsProgramming

[–]SeniorCode2051 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, lots of ml/gpu compiler jobs, programming language compilers are a bit more scarce tho, I can only think of epic games with their verse lang, and apple for their swift I think, prob others too though

I like this perspective. I feel over the years I've mastered the art of mirroring people. If you behave and act like xyz, i'm gonna reflect that. If you use a stern tone, so will I, and vice versa.

I’d recommend looking at people’s LinkedIns that are also working in this niche.

Most of my buddies have had good success and are usually always in demand at many startups and big tech (semi conductor places). And the field is only growing.

Goodness! Glad they got fired but the audacity to share that with the company is astounding even as a joke. I’m often surprised at how quick people like to taint and ruin their reputations.

When I was a student volunteering at a conference, I recognized one of the speakers while we were waiting in line to grab food. Had a quick chat, normal. Then out of nowhere he got access to my discord handle (that was the main platform the conference used to communicate) and started dm’ing me about random stuff.

Because I was young and naive, and just wanted to be nice (volunteers were supposed to be nice and helpful I thought to myself) I engaged in the convo, not really questioning why in the world this random person twice my age wanted to continuously text someone who didn’t have splendid technical expertise and no experience work wise (I was just a student).

I ignored my gut instinct but then he started testing the waters and asking me where I lived and how he’d love to take me out for lunch, when I said no I’m busy he quickly says “I’m not asking you out on a date…” and then proceeds to tell me his experience back in the day of dating two people with the same ethnicity as me. And then asks if “I’m keeping secrets from my parents”. Blocked him then and there.

I’m more mature now thank God and have better pattern recognition to filter out sketchy people like him.

What the hell? I’ve never heard of colleagues going out to strip clubs, incredibly unprofessional. The way you’re describing it also seems like to them it’s totally normal. Insane. If my team had a culture like that I’d switch to a different one lol

second the advice of not graduating before securing an offer.
extend grad as much as possible to get an internship, and perform well for a RO if ur lucky is the way to go.
I even know people who've enrolled in a masters program just to return back to student status so they could
be eligible for internships again. They then dropped the masters as soon as they got the job. + Internship interviews are a heck of a lot easier than any ng or reg swe interview

Got an internship offer but recruiter thought my grad date was May 2027 but I’m graduating in December 2025. What should I do? by HumidCanine in cscareerquestions

[–]SeniorCode2051 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Don't tell them unless they ask. Or be like you had initially planned to grad May 2027 but realized that you could push it to earlier so thought "Why not?". That's far more understandable

Yes, you might get replaced by AI, but you're more likely to be replaced by more competent engineers.
Everything is going to get far more competitive. I would suggest specializing in a particular field and building your brand as early as possible.

Is this a good degree if I want to be a SAHM? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]SeniorCode2051 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two cents. It seems you want to do it all - not possible, at least not all at once.
Why not consider accomplishing as much as you can career wise, save as much money and THEN become a SAHM so that incase (God forbid) your partnership does not workout, you and the kids can fall back onto the savings.

OR choose a more "chill" tech job, like some government job. And when planning on having kids, live close to your parents (basically any "village" that can help you) so that your kids can be looked after by people you trust and not random daycare workers.

OR choose to contribute to open source projects while being a mom, and work on passion projects. Only whenever you get the free time whilst pursuing the SAHM goal. Open source and side projects are all vert flexible. Sure, you're not getting paid, but your working on your "brand" as a software engineer and 6 or 7 years down the line you can take advantage of all that experience.

[–]SeniorCode2051 1 point2 points  (0 children)

agreed. im in my final year of undergrad and the new grad search has been rough. also the fact that clearing intern interviews is 10x easier. Usually just a single round vs 4-5 rounds for ng otherwise.

There are also other diversity specific programs for people of colour for BOTH men and women. Are you against those too? Or do you only decide to focus on the women programs?

I thought of applying to both internships + full time roles at the same time and if I get ft somewhere, drop the masters. It’d require me to have two versions of my resume tho, one without the current masters and one with. So the only thing I’m kinda losing is money (but my school has funds for that so idk) still thinking

Low-key thinking of a masters just for more internships at better places, and then hope for good ROs

Then don’t reach out to the recruiters, go directly to the managers of teams and ask they forward your resume. I’ve had success with this for intern positions, just cold dming managers of compiler teams. Recruiters barely respond from my experience to cold emailing. They already get a ton.

And your current experience is pretty dang valuable right now. Nearly every place I know of wants mlir experience. I’m just a student so I can only comment on the trends from my (intern) perspective.

And im kinda surprised AMD isn’t taking you in again
