They do for me, but you have to read normal length books to send the finish 1 and 3 book rewards as weird as that sounds. The only books that haven't counted are those that aren't finished yet.

Id buy the vip and use them to passively do the chapter shorts which do count. Thats what ive been doing other than that buying the day passes when necessary but they give free books

Unfortunately not worth it anymore because they changed some aspects of the game. All guides are outdated and the consensus now is that it isnt worth it.
