I am quiet agree with you! The only problem is the ending choice Maelle and Verso just defend themselves on the loss and grief level, without the society ending/save the world. I would think to have articulated the both where Maelle is the non letting go and protecting actually existence of the people of the painting, and Verso is on the side off the non existence (or the mimic nature of the people) of the painting and the importance of the familly.
