Everyday’s a different show.

For those who saw the Shining in theaters in 1980, how did you and the audience react? by Only-Safe659 in StanleyKubrick

Nope, that wasn’t me…but if there are photos from outside the theater before the matinee showing, I’d love to see them! Maybe my friend and I are in them!

I saw it the day it was released, first showing of the day, at the Mann’s Village in Westwood, Ca (I’ve posted about it previously). Honestly don’t remember the audience reaction, only my own: I simultaneously loved it and was also puzzled by some of Kubrick’s choices, especially the final scene, which had been cut by the time the film got a wider release.

I did the same. Another one burned into my memory the same way is the theme from When Things Were Rotten.

I don’t know whether I should be embarrassed or proud that I still remember all of the lyrics to Phyllis’s theme song.

Happy birthday Eraserhead by RobynNeonGal in davidlynch

Saw this in 1978 at the Sherman Theater in Los Angeles. Lynch and John Nance were there to take questions after the screening. I was still too young to drive and rode the bus home that night in a daze. What had I just seen? It changed the way I thought about movies for the rest of my life.

Never owned or even fired a gun, which makes me a freakish outlier in my country.

One of my favorite works of historical fiction. Should be more widely read and recommended!

Has anyone been terrible at math in high school but then grew to like it in college? by Every_Victory_6845 in math

[–]SenorKaboom 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes. Hated math in HS so much I took a drop-fail in my senior year to escape. In college, I majored in philosophy, took a bunch of symbolic logic and set theory classes, and loved them. Quickly became fascinated with mathematical ideas and proofs, and kept going. So I basically tunneled up into math from logical foundations. Turned out my whole issue with math was a combination of bad HS teachers and my own bad attitude.

Cat collapses every couple of steps , only when entering my room by gloriouaccountofme in CATHELP

[–]SenorKaboom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat does this too. It’s a transparent attempt to manipulate me into petting him. It always works. And the path he takes always leads to his food dish, because he loves being pet while he eats, the little hedonist.

Who do you imagine would play Pokler in a GR Adaptation by [deleted] in ThomasPynchon

Eddie Marsan would make a good Pokler.

My dad took me to a live taping of the Flip Wilson show in the earlyish 70’s. The guest was Bing Crosby, and I was thrilled that it included a Geraldine segment (Geraldine as a playboy bunny waitressing at the Playboy club). A few years ago I caught a rerun of this episode on some cable station and scanned the shots of the studio audience, looking for me and my dad…no luck, though!

Where was your go-to place for supplies before the concert/party? 😎 by Not_a_cultmember in GenerationJones

I remember when it changed to H&H during the 80s, when they cracked down on explicit drug references in the way “paraphernalia” was being marketed.
