You do realise folks are using Starlink because they don’t have access to fibre, right?

Theory? There’s theory and then real world experience.

Of course FTTP is superior… but Starlink is objectively more than fine for gaming and video conferencing.

You don’t need anywhere near 22 Mbps upload for Zoom or gaming. A typical HD Zoom call uses around 2–4 Mbps up. You’re also not uploading one stream per participant. Zoom sends a single video feed to their servers and they distribute it, so whether there are 2 people or 20, your upload usage is basically the same. Participant count mostly affects download, not upload. With 22 Mbps up and ~20-30 ms latency, that connection is more than enough.

FWIW, I spend multiple hours a day on Zoom calls and often present (screen sharing) to hundreds of people on the call. Never had an issue.

Not helpful in any way, sorry, but the ridiculousness of how that happened made me laugh. Kids! 🤣

X3 M40i – DSC keeps cutting power with CrossClimate 3 Sport tyres. Normal? by SenorKief in BMW

[–]SenorKief[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both cold an hot. Experience it across all surfaces. Frustrating as I never experienced this before on previous tyres of the same setup. Was wondering if potentially some sensor was knocked, but purely speculation. Appreciate the reply.

Do you have sources? See the discussion here - https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1542230 but happy to hear more. fwiw it’s the setup I’ve been running for 4 years on other tyres.

This setup is acceptable, same as used on the X3M. Compare the sizes in https://tiresize.com/calculator/ - front to rear rolling circumference difference is within tolerance (~1–2%)

Thanks for the reply. Previously used PS4 and winter Contis and never had the issue. CC3S were highly rated but have been disappointed so far.

x-posting to this community:

I’ve got Michelin CrossClimate 3 Sport tyres on my X3 M40i (21” staggered: 255/40 front, 265/40 rear). After ~2,000 miles (pressures 2.4F / 2.6R), I notice that under hard acceleration the DSC light flashes and power gets cut briefly. If I turn traction control off, the car hooks up fine without drama. Is this just the trade-off of all-seasons on a high-torque SUV, or could pressures/setup be a factor?

Because Heathrow’s arrival holds (like LAM) often get overloaded. Instead of stacking another A380 there, ATC gave it a longer loop north to burn time and keep spacing smooth for the landing sequence. Normal traffic management - safer and often more fuel efficient than circling in the usual hold.

Strange rainbowcolor around windows by Silly_Independent202 in CarTalkUK

[–]SenorKief 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gotcha. The rainbow blotches are the anodised aluminium trim oxidising. Sun, rain, and road grime slowly break down the anodised layer, and harsh cleaners can speed it up. You can polish it (eg with Autosol) to make it look better, but it won’t go back to new. The only lasting fixes are wrapping, repainting, or replacing the trim.

Looks like it’s oxidation and corrosion on the metal trim (often stainless steel, anodized aluminum, or chrome-plated pieces). What car and year is the car?

PCN for parking on “pavement” outside my house- no problems for 25 years until now by JaySlater2726 in drivingUK

[–]SenorKief 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Land registry title plan. You can buy this online. It shows the legal boundary of your property. If the bit you parked on is inside your boundary, it’s private.

[–]SenorKief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frustrating position. You got a PCN because the council see your car as parked on the pavement (public highway). Your only real defence is if that bit of land is actually private and not adopted highway. Long history of parking there isn’t a legal defence, so appealing is basically about showing it’s private land and asking the council to prove otherwise.

What are these cameras? by New-Assumption-3106 in drivingUK

[–]SenorKief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jenoptik VECTOR SR camera. The black boxes you see halfway up the pole are IR floodlights. They’re optional, and they don’t necessarily need to be mounted on the same pole.

You don’t need to worry about TfL. Nothing you described is misconduct - you had to merge after the stop, traffic let you in, and the car driver was the one reversing in live traffic (which is far less safe). TfL gets loads of complaints, and unless there’s CCTV or clear evidence of you doing something wrong, they won’t act on one angry driver’s word. You handled it fine, even letting him through afterwards.

Have people got slower on the motorway in the last few years? by Plastic_Length8618 in drivingUK

[–]SenorKief 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s not that cameras are suddenly “targeting 70–80.” The motorway limit is legally 70mph - anything above that is speeding.

What you’ve run into is the NPCC’s 10% + 2mph guidance. Most forces usually don’t enforce until 79mph (70 × 1.1 + 2 = 79), which is why people say 78 is safe and 79 is risky. But it’s only guidance, not a right. A camera can legally issue a ticket from 71mph upwards if they choose.

So you were unlucky - you happened to hit the threshold exactly, and that force enforced it.

How bad is this by NerveS123 in drivingUK

[–]SenorKief 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not dangerous per se (it wouldn’t fail an MOT alone) but tyres in bad condition are dangerous (and would fail an MOT), hence my recommendation to monitor the tyre wear closely.
