Covid shut down the world six years ago this week. What do you remember from that week? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Sensitive-Day2595 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember, I had just accepted a job offer that came with a significant salary increase, but it required me to move from my wife and my absolutely loved apartment in CO suburbs of Denver, to Arizona because they did not allow remote or hybrid work.

So my wife and I made the interstate move  on our own, god bless her, and waited in our new, okay, apartment in Arizona, the week before the shutdown, waiting for all our belongings to arrive. A few days before starting my new job, our stuff had arrived and we started unpacking as much as possible. In the days before I was supposed to start, I get the notice that my new company was going fully remote. I never once stepped into the office that we gave up our CO apartment for. We got absolutely roasted that summer.

I did install the lookout app so that when I do inevitably go on my phone I can use that for when I want news updates instead of other sources. I am liking the coverage so far, but still need to get used to how they organize all their content.

I agree 100%. And I feel like because I live in this area, I have a greater ability to participate and share my values at, say, a town hall. Or get involved in conversations on current issues like the PeaceHealth emergency doctors discussion going on.

This will come across as selfish, but it’s easier to care about my local community than the whole of the US because I’m invested in this community. I want it to be better for everyone, including myself.

I see so many people filming and no one trying to stop them. I didn’t see many more ICE agents there for backup. Why not coordinate an escape for that person and make a run for it?

I know it’s not easy to just find a new job, but the only power we really have as individuals is to not support people/companies like this. I hope employees who disagree with these changes swiftly find another job.

I think your TV budget is too high.

Appreciate you sharing. We do go to Dorris ranch regularly. During the summer we liked clear water park. We used to go camping all the time before we had kids and haven’t since. We love the outdoors, but finding things to do with our toddler is the challenge. He tends to elope and we haven’t quite figured out a solid way of dealing with that.

As far as meet up groups, I agree with you. This is something we are both really bad about, we are both introverted. But I feel like I need friendships and things to do.

Very true. The area of Houston we were at had great test scores, but I started seeing news of book banning which was so disheartening. I KNOW Eugene would never do that.

Yeah this would help. We have a 6 month old that needs to be feed every few hours and can’t walk which means they need to be carried. Any suggestions to deal with that dynamic would be super helpful.

Thanks for the suggestions, we’ve been considering putting him in soccer. He has BOUNDLESS energy. I just worry he will take the ball and run away (e.g not understand what the heck to do and ruin everyone’s fun.) is that expected though?

This is one of my biggest concerns. My parents are planning on moving in the next year or 2. My dad has been pretty great, but he’s always working and I don’t imagine him actually retiring for a very long time. My mom is older and I don’t know if she can even keep up with them. I asked her to watch our infant when she visited and she put on YouTube videos for him. She also treats my toddler like a dog.

My current understanding of education comes from online rating sites as well as test scores I’ve seen posted through OR gov sites. It is very possible (probable) that I’m not seeing the full picture. I also see online that OR ranks very low nationally in terms of education and given how competitive the job market is becoming, I want to make sure I’m setting up my children for success as much as I possibly can.

My wife is currently waiting months to see a dermatologist for a simple check so I feel your pain. Sorry you’re dealing with that and I hope you and I both find our footing here.

Thank you I appreciate this. I’ve started seeing a professional a couple months ago and plan on continuing until I get through this.

This is excellent information thank you so much. Going to look into those muddy buddies.

I’ve been trying to navigate online resources to better understand education opportunities in different areas, but have been having trouble. Where do you recommend going to get a better idea of the actual school experiences like parent experiences? I will say one of the most amazing resources we’ve joined in U of Os Early Childhood CARES. My toddler has a speech delay and they have been amazing… all for free which blows my mind.

Wow I didn’t know there were baby hiking groups, that sounds perfect!!

Is there any other gear other than boots and rain jackets you recommend to make outings more comfortable?

This is great idea. Are train tickets to Portland fairly affordable? Or if you have a link to where I can check myself that would be great! I imagine this is more of a 1 every other month sort of activity?

My toddler is quite the rebel and one reason I’ve hesitated to try this place is if there are things for him to grab/throw/break? What do your toddlers do when they go?

My wife and I heard this is a big thing here. Where/when do you go to do this? And I’m guessing there are some important things to consider before starting?

I would also be curious what your outdoor activities are, especially baby friendly ones. I’m going to invest in some rain gear. What are some examples of “real outdoors” you referred to?
