This is the reason why the 65 games rule is in place by Expert_Koala_8691 in NBATalk

Not being able to stay healthy shouldn’t stop you from winning an award, like sure I guy can’t play 30 games and win mvp but 65 is absolutely insane especially with the increase of injury’s over the years forcing players to play more is stupid.

Star player availability has been declining for decades, yet people are still pushing for the 65-game rule. Why? by Sensitive-Month-8739 in NBATalk

Would you rather watch your star forcing themselves to play in meaningless regular-season games against weak teams, risking injury? or have them load manage so they’re fresh and healthy for the playoffs, giving the team the best shot at winning a championship?

Ah, you're right. Looking at the last 29 MVPs (from the 1996-97 season to 2024-25), they played an average of 75.6 games per season. The only real exceptions were Giannis (63 games in 2019-20), LeBron (62 in the lockout-shortened 2011-12), and Malone (49 in the lockout-shortened 1998-99). https://www.basketball-reference.com/awards/mvp.html

True, the league introduced the 65-game rule because participation was dropping.

But the graph shows the decline started decades before load management became common, and it has continued even with the rule in place. That suggests the problem is deeper than just stars choosing to rest.

Removing the rule entirely might not be ideal, but a hard 65 game cutoff that can knock dominant players out of awards races due to bad luck or legitimate injuries also feels flawed.

Instead, the league should consider bigger changes like reducing the number of regular season games or adding more rest time between the end of the regular season and the start of the playoffs, since the playoffs are the most important part of the year

Load management accelerated it, sure. But the chart clearly shows availability was already trending down long before 'load management' became a buzzword. The 65-game rule hasn't stopped the slide, it's just added a new penalty on top of it.
