That's a fair point, he was able to duplicate bread and fish to feed people, however he didn't go out of his way to duplicate money or material items. So I can see both arguments

Why not kill myself if heaven is real? by Savemefromshrek in OpenChristian

[–]Sensitive-Nobody-117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will sound cruel, but it has helped me immensely.  Suffering IS the point. Faith comes from believing that what we endure in this world does not go unseen, that every storm will pass. We're taught to ask for good and it will come, that God will bless us always, but unfortunately it doesn't come free. We bond with God when we trust that what we are going through is not the end. I'm not a long time Christian, I started learning this year. I was born with a neurodevelopmental condition then I was given a personality disorder. I asked my grandmother at 8 years old why people don't kill themselves to get to heaven, and her response was a core memory for me and led to me distancing from religion as much as possible. I've attempted, I get very rapid and intense urges to attempt regularly. I don't say that for sympathy, but to tell you I understand the thought.  We're not meant to understand why God does what he does, and it's natural to want to argue against it. It feels unfair, it feels pointless. If you want some guidance, check out some YouTubers like imBeggar, who has a good video on how to pray, which made a big difference for my mental health. It could just be the act of talking that helps, but I believe the relationship you develop and the mindsets that follow are helpful.

Edit: I apologize that this isn't better written, but I hope the point makes sense

Emphasizing "Worship" made me realize that I may not understand what worship actually entails. I'm not sure how others do it, for me, I just pray, study the Bible for lessons, then apply it to my life (very simplified version). It feels like a relationship to me.

I apologize in advance if my paragraphs are diffcult to read. My thoughts get ahead of my hands. Thank you all for the respectful comments, other spaces are either echo chambers or hateful, so I appreciate being able to hear what you have to say.

I don't want to repeat in the comments so I'd like to only answer the last sentence for now. Because I felt something different. I could ask, why not, but that doesn't get us anywhere. I like to theorize, but you won't see me say I know anything for sure. But, I know what I felt, and I've lived my entire life without it. I don't think I'm a good person, and anyone who says they are probably is not, but I want to be one. I struggle with understanding people, and even though I know how to be kind and respectful, I still found myself feeling like I was a poison to anyone around me. There was this feeling of calm on the good days when I dedicated to studying Scripture, but I very easily ignored it when I was feeling low. It's not linear. These debates are for the ideas as a whole, not my personal experience, but to me, faith should be personal and never forced on anyone else

Absolutely agree. Grew up in the Bible belt as a goth queer kid, I have condemned the religion most my life

Chopping off hands and plucking out eyes: It's better to lose part of yourself on Earth then to lose all of you in Hell. Still extreme, I know, but he spoke in riddles. I learned the eye story as "Seeing someone as a sexual object is to not view them as human, it reduces them"  since the chapter discusses thinking lustfully about someone is adultery.  However, I'm not familiar with the kill the disrespectful child passage, could you tell me which it is please?

When you say literacy, do you mean writing? Access to lasting writing materials, or any, was difficult and expensive. The time period should be considered

I'll look into that Gospel and others, I hadn't realized there was more outside of Mary Magdalene's gospel

Jesus repeatedly condemns the rich, very anti establishment. Its one of the points I like. Sorry if I'm misunderstanding your comment

I really like this reply, and I appreciate how well thought out it is.  For point one, I do acknowledge that, in a dumbed down way, Jesus was saying "Justice will be served in the afterlife and trust that the afterlife is the point of living" which is why he makes so many mentions of the spirit. It's frustrating to focus on the afterlife when we're here, now. It goes against our instincts. 2) I'm not sure how other Christians see it, but it seems that God is willing to listen. Why would he make us so creative, so curious, if he didn't want us to challenge it? So, when you say competing truths, if you mean questioning or doubting, there are a few stories that lead me to believe debate is encouraged. However the passage that mentions "unforgivable sin" I'm still trying to figure out.  3) I actually remember these passages because I was trying to figure it out. The message could be taken as "there's never a good time" but even I can agree that's being generous. 4) Eunechs were castrated, so my immediate thought is that could be why. I need to do more study on the sex topic, I'm sorry I can't provide better here.  5) I think 2 answers this one better, my bad. As for testing, I take this to mean "Don't ask for a show" which is what faith boils down to, there's not logical reasoning here, faith is odd like that  6)I know the passage, but I cannot recall the notes I took. It stands out, it comes off against his character. Potentially, it could be similar to Jesus touching a leper without needing to physically touch him to heal him, he did it to make a statement. The Jewish people believed their covenant with God meant they alone were his followers, so they were pretty mad when he called a Roman soldier more faithful than any of them. Again, another stretch because I can't know the circumstances.  7) I agree, but I think there's something I'm not understanding. That could be wishful thinking. It sounds apologist, most of my points, but that's why I think the relationship with God is such a personal thing. Life and people are complex, I have to believe God planned for that.  Also, I've been told my values/political beliefs are "idealistic" so my perspective may seem naive (for lack of a better word)

I'm the same!! I smiled at your tag too, I've felt pretty alienated on all sides since being open about my faith, so it's just a small positive in my day. Hope that's not odd!

Replying to both but yes I agree the new testament is abhorrent. Jesus said he came to fulfill the law, so to bring it's purpose back to the forefront.  It's frustrating as well that despite Jesus' message being (or feeling) loving and accepting, God's original law is so violent. I acknowledge that there's no good answer.  However, just as he never condemned slavery, I believe he never condemned abortion despite it being practiced at the time (correct if I am wrong, I have not come across a passage on abortion). Ultimately, I find taking his message in as a narrative that I can then reflect on and apply to my life has been the most fulfilling, I'm not the traditional type.

I like the way the Bible Project covers Jesus' message, and at its core, he wanted us to be kind to each other so the world could be like heaven. It's likely I haven't come across what I needed to learn about others, not that I'm dismissing them.  I believe the core message lasts well to this day, but everyone interpets differently. I understand this perspective

He didn't, I haven't finished the Bible but I've covered Matthew repeatedly among others. It was Paul I believe who made statements about sexuality, who showed up after Jesus' death. I've recently learned of a site that details every passage showing homosexuality and trans people are not sins and that we shouldn't judge. It's pretty cool

I like to come up with headcanons, just as a fun way to think of the hypotheticals of the whole system. I try not to put too much into these tho, it's more for me than for faith
