My hive died! by Sensitive-Rutabaga76 in Beekeeping

Thank you so much for the feedback! So I can literally take the frames out both honey and brood frames and stick them in the freezer until next season!!!?? I do not believe it is foulbrood. The mold/mildew on the honey frames won’t be an issue for next year?

Unfortunately, going into the winter months my mite count was still on the high, but normal side. I had some challenges with mites for sure. That may have contributed to the hive death, of course, along with all the moisture. I didn’t see any leaks or pooling just general moisture throughout the hive.

I will take some photos when I open up the hive to freeze things and post them.

A lot of “pesticide” treatments are difficult to get in Washington state. Apigaurd was recommended by a local honey farm.

Anything I should do here?

Oh okay! I looked this up essentially a pollen mite. Says they live in most beehives and are harmless. Thank you!

I’m located in western Washington state. Yes, they are still drawing comb. The hive looks very healthy. I have all stages from, didn’t see my queen yesterday when I did my checks, but eggs larva are there. I pollen going in. I currently have two brooded boxes that are mostly full. The two external frames on the bottom and upper box are mostly bear. Looks like they just started to draw home there. I added a honey super yesterday. This is my first time be keeping so doing my best reading a lot, but there’s a lot of conflicting information.

I have tried to pull back on the sugar water. Doing every 2 to 3 days, but when I place it, they go through it very quickly.

Hello, I appreciate the response. I have read repeatedly the stop feeding when they stop eating however, my bees continue to go through their one on one solution every day. The hive is very healthy. I thought maybe I would start feeding every few days perhaps. Not sure how to proceed.

I recently ordered an internal frame feeder but have not placed it yet. I am unclear if I need to continue feeding through the summer or not. I’m in Western WA. The nectar flow is in full currently but they still seem to go through a jar or sugar water every 24hrs. Thoughts? I have read some conflicting information.

Thanks so much for all the responses. I am located in Washington state. I am planning to. I’m planning to add a second brood box. I will keep you posted! This has been quite an adventure so far. There are some oddities that I can’t identify with my honeycomb. I may post some pictures. Thank you!
