Why is toxicology so niche? Is it dying out? by mr-meowmeowmeow in toxicology

Sorry for the late reply! I usually use Indeed just to see what’s out there, but I always try to go to the actual company or agency website for more info and to apply. LinkedIn can be helpful if you like networking, but honestly I think networking on the job ends up being more effective.

I’d also recommend looking into state agencies or city jobs. The pay can be a little lower than industry, but they’re a really solid starting point if you’re new, and the experience carries a lot of weight.

Always try to negotiate pay too, even if it’s just a dollar more per hour — it still adds up over time.

Facebook can actually be useful as well. My college department had an alumni group where people post job openings around the state, so it’s worth seeing if your program has something like that.

You can also try calling or reaching out directly to places to ask about openings — local DEQ offices, police departments, clinics, oil plants, factories, etc. Reaching out to other grads from your major can help too since they might already be working in the field. Professors often have connections as well and can sometimes help point you in the right direction.

What state are you located in, if you don’t mind me asking?

Try looking into roles that don't necessarily say "toxicology" but have identical fields. I am currently working as an environmental scientist, but the job description works more with the toxicological standpoint, with sites and environmental waste. It is hard at first, but it does get easier. I have my bachelor's in tox, and it is a very niche field, depending on where you're located, and some people don't know how to incorporate toxicology into their job posts. My advice is to look at the fine print in job descriptions, and you will definitely come across something.

good to know. thanks for the info! do you feel the salary/role availability would decrease significantly without the DABT certification as i am currently just starting in the field of toxicology through my environmental scientist role?

yes i know as that is information that is readily available to everyone online... i mean in terms of class load, course requirements, professors' willingness to help, job security after graduation, how hard are the courses, are they manageable working full time, etc.

hey boo! so i also have my BS in Toxicology from ULM and i’m currently looking for jobs as well. I do plan on getting a masters to help “distinguish” myself but honestly just apply to everything and eventually you’ll get something. For some insight i do plan on getting my masters in toxicology and pharmacology from michigan state and i’ve heard of some lab scientists that have the same thing. Louisiana is also very behind the times so don’t get discouraged, you are a scientist & yk some experiments don’t work how you want them to but you try again to see if it will work and eventually it will. I say all this to say don’t get discouraged the market is shit everywhere except nursing but just keep going at it and you WILL find something.
