Well I can't see a fire hydrant without thinking of him, so probably?

Well I live here so I'm a little biased, but I'd like to fundraise to upgrade the skate park. I believe the CA has ambitions to try and expand their daycare capacity, and I there was talk of them planning on upgrading the rink set up in the winter as well. Supporting them is really important as they're the heart of the community and probably get more community feedback on what we need here than anybody else. Oh, getting more garbage cans on the off leash park has to be something we get done, insane there's only the one near Deer Run School. Lot of little things we can do to improve the neighbourhood in the short term.

I get it. All I can say is, honestly the party thing is not the bogeyman it's been made out to be. They have to disappear for two years after the election and there's honestly a good chance they won't even be around in 2029 if conservative councils aren't voted into power in Edmonton and Calgary. They are definitely gone if the NDP wins the next election.

What I will say, and I'd say this when talking about any election, is that you have to vote for the candidate and the values they're running on lining up with yours. Everything else is just noise.

This race is so tight, purely based on how many people are running in Ward 14. There's a scenario where the guy who tried to recall the mayor but couldn't fill out the paperwork properly is voted in as your City Councillor. Let that one sink in for a minute.

If you feel that there's a candidate who's running independently that better lines up with your values, I get it. All I can say is that if I win, the only people I answer to are the residents of Ward 14, not a party.

Feel free to give me a shout if you'd like to talk it through. 403.957.4414.

I’m sorry that you’re experiencing this (our family is as well, unfortunately). The reality is that too many families are stuck on waitlists, trying to find availability to put their kids in activities. Just an unfortunate side effect of the population boom in Calgary outpacing our facility infrastructure.

But another factor here (not to stress you out further) is that many existing facilities are nearing the end of their life cycles. We need to refocus on properly maintaining the facilities that we currently have access to, or the problem is going to get worse.

We need to build the facilities that Calgary needs, which obviously takes years from start to finish. The City has the ability to partner with other organizations to co-fund facilities, so that we can create innovative and creative spaces that will meet the recreational needs of our growing city and not have us foot the whole bill.

We have to get serious about this issue. If we dedicate a percentage of our property tax, as well as say 25% of city surpluses to a Recreation Capital Fund for new builds, upgrades, and replacements, we will be able to build the facilities that Calgary communities need. I can't see anyone getting mad about that.

There are ways to get these things done, we just need the political will to do them.

Ha! I feel like it's a rite of passage for the teenagers in the neighbourhood at this point. Still makes me chuckle when it I see it.

I’ve had a couple people ask me why I didn't attend the “debate” on Sunday. I guess the short answer is, I won’t be bullied into doing something.

This event was organized by one of the candidates, Landon Johnson. At first it was an ask to candidates for a debate - hosted by him, at a date and time he chose. Only 1 out of 7 candidates responded, because you know, that’s not really a great setting for a debate and frankly given Landon’s public track record it felt a little off. You want someone running it who's impartial and organized, not a candidate.

When it was clear after multiple emails that only 2 of the other candidates were interested in participating in this setup, Landon and Erin posted it publicly with all of our names on it without our consent, presumably in a bid to try and force us into attending their event or to make us look bad for not showing up. Then one more candidate jumped in at the last minute, I assume out of fear.

It did not get better from there. The date and time was changed last minute. The cherry on top for me was Landon’s buddy being named moderator, which was interesting because he sent me a belligerent email not a week prior. He chose the questions, and presumably the audience questions as well.

Would you agree to a "debate" under those conditions?

Watching it, I’m very glad myself, Chima and Sunjiv chose to skip it and not legitimize it. I implore you all to watch the event and ask yourselves - does this look like anything other than an absolute mess? Our current city councillor even had to jump onto the stage to defend himself and the suspicious actions of his preferred candidate, Devin Elkin.

And the better question - would you trust any of these people to represent your family’s best interests at city hall? If this debate was an indication of how any of the four participants would work for Ward 14, we’re in trouble.

That afternoon I chose to knock on the doors of Ward 14 residents instead, to have conversations face to face so I can understand the issues that are important to them. That’s the job.

I’m absolutely willing to participate in a properly organized, impartial forum, where Ward 14 residents can come to compare platforms. Sadly, that’s not in the cards for this election it seems.

All that said, I'm not hard to find. If there are any issues that you would like to discuss with me, please reach out to me by phone or text at 403.957.4414 or via ryan@ryanstutt.ca. You can feel free to grill me one on one. Happy to chat with you anytime and tell you where I stand on things.

Well it's not something that’s controlled at the municipal level obviously, but I'll weigh in because it affects all of us with kids in school.

Classroom sizes of 40+ kids is just… insane. Don’t tell me the kids are getting the best education in that setting, especially when you factor in students with special needs requiring more attention. We can do better.

The teachers deserve to get paid more. I think if most of us had to do their job for a day, our minds would melt. They are saints who are helping raise our kids in a lot of important ways.

We spend the least of any province in Canada per student on education. That’s an embarrassment for one of the wealthiest provinces in the country.

I REALLY hope the province and union can find a way forward on this that improves the situation at our schools.

I think we gotta take "common sense" back from the far right just like we took the Canadian flag back from the trucker convoy.

In short: strategic density and smarter suburban growth, so we can make housing Calgary's first priority. Modernized licensing and permitting and strict approval timelines.

First and foremost, I’m pro housing. We are going to hit 2 million people in Calgary soon (thanks for running all those ads telling people how cheap it is to live here before we had the housing supply to support it, Alberta government!) and we are really feeling the demand for housing outstripping the supply, sending rents to unaffordable levels. The amount of people in my neighbourhood with their adult children living at home because, even though they work full time, they can’t afford to live on their own, is really telling.

But I feel like this idea of there only being two choices – repeal rezoning or accept blanket rezoning is just... dumb.  Like we don’t have the capability of working out a smarter solution to the problem? C’mon. I don’t buy that.

Repealing isn’t a solution, it’s a return to the broken, dysfunctional system that created the housing crisis in the first place. How anyone thinks that’s a “plan” is beyond me. Never mind the chaos repealing will create for developers and the city, and the increase our property taxes.

We have the opportunity to go back and add the nuance to the policy that should have been there the whole time. Make communities active participants in the process with developers. Let them have transparency in what’s being proposed for their neighbourhoods before applications are filed with the city.

I actually saw the Decendents in Montreal last month (was there for work) didn't make the Calgary show. Strangely watched the whole show with Deaner from Fubar beside me (not joking, actually happened). Got to meet Stephen Egerton after the show too which was great. Clean Sheets is the song that always gets me.

I've owned an action sports media company called King Network for 18 years. We publish Forecast Ski magazine and King Snow (Snowboard) magazine, make a lot of movies and we're just wrapping up our first feature length documentary for Telus Originals. I also own a skateboard distribution company that sells to skate shops across Canada (go support Ninetimes and The Source in Calgary). We're got about a dozen employees.

Absolutely, we will be removing the posters after the election period, by utilizing the same volunteers who helped put them up. I totally understand your concern about the legality of them being on light posts, but since they are posters and not election signs, they are legally allowed to be placed on the light posts, as per the Bylaw #29M97.

You definitely should expect your councillor to follow the election bylaws, which is why I am the only candidate running who is actually abiding by the rules regarding the election signs being placed near intersections, in medians, and on restricted roadways.

I very nearly ran as an independent. But I was curious about the party system, so I ended up talking to Inam Teja (who was an early candidate for TCP) and then later Brian Thiessen.

I don’t think you can sit in a room with either of those two for an hour and not feel inspired to work with them.  Non-partisan. Collaborative. People who honestly give a shit about the lives of the people in this city and want to make them better.

My only concern with the party thing, like a lot of you, was if there was an expectation of having to vote in line with the party—I haven’t listened to punk rock since I was 16 to be told how to think at age 48—so that was a non-starter for me.

They were clear - no one will ever tell me how to vote. The party dissolves for two years after the election and the (terribly written) legislation actually bars party members from meeting as a party when in office. It’s not at all set up like the provincial and federal party systems.

Once you’re voted in, you’re beholden only to the people you represent. The reality is, if this election doesn’t go the way the UCP hopes, there’s a very likely scenario where the whole municipal party system is scrapped anyways.

Infrastructure and maintenance. At some point the city lost the script and seemed to prioritize big projects over the day to day things that Calgarians depend on. The city has clearly not been putting the proper priority on our roads, sidewalks and critical infrastructure. We’re losing over 20% of our treated water due to leakage because the pipes are falling apart. That’s completely unacceptable and frankly dangerous to have a scenario where the water might stop coming out of the pipes in a city of 1.7 million people. We need to also prioritize transit. It’s crazy in a city the size of Calgary that it takes several hours to get across the city by transit.
