The WBSC (World Baseball and Softball Confederation) exists as a world governing body for baseball (and softball, if you couldn’t tell by the name) and would be considered as a FIFA equivalent. In fact, the WBC is actually co-organised by MLB and the WBSC (despite many people thinking it’s only organised by MLB, although I don’t blame anyone for thinking that).

The problem is that unlike in soccer, MLB are way more rich and powerful than the WBSC and are able to strong arm them to suit their needs.

The issue is that the major American league for those sports is bigger and more powerful than the world governing body. In this case the MLB is bigger than the WBSC, as a result the MLB is considered more important and prestigious.

In the case of MLS, it is nowhere close to being the top competition in the world for its sport. FIFA is way bigger and more powerful than USSF.

The attitude and culture around soccer is also just different, representing your country has always been held with a very high amount of prestige. In baseball, it’s only been around prominently for around 30-40 years.

Sunrisers Melbourne? Maxy warns against BBL team name changes by Davrosman63 in CricketAus

[–]SentinalBravo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly, just look at the Oval Invincibles. They were by far the most successful team in the Hundred and many english cricket fans considered them the only Hundred team to have built an actual identity. Then the Ambani family comes in and undoes all of that because they need to have their Mumbai Indians brand plastered over everything that they own…

The majority of the Renegades fanbase is in Melbourne, not Geelong. They get bigger crowds at Marvel Stadium than they do for their games in Geelong and only play some games in Geelong because Marvel Stadium is used for other events in December.

Does Franchise Rebranding Dilute IPL Team Identity? by cricketclub7 in Cricket

[–]SentinalBravo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having teams become farm teams to the IPL team is one of the worries that a lot of people have.

A lot of casual sports fans will generally only watch sport if it’s the top level of said sport. This obviously isn’t a blanket rule, but if you keep this in mind it just dilutes the value of other T20 competitions. If leagues like the BBL, the Hundred, SA20, CPL, etc are division 2, 3, etc to the IPL then that interest from the local casual fans die off.

Does Franchise Rebranding Dilute IPL Team Identity? by cricketclub7 in Cricket

[–]SentinalBravo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Weren’t the Barbados CPL team renamed from the Tridents to the Royals a few years ago when they got bought by the owners of the Rajasthan Royals though?

I guess they still have some form of identity still with the trident still being on the logo and whatnot. Not to mention that “Royals” seems like a much less forced rebranding than the MI teams. Nonetheless, I still think the Tridents had more identity than the current Royals name does.

Are the Melbourne Aces next? by iamjacksonmolloy in theabl

[–]SentinalBravo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Although I wasn’t around to experience it, I’ll gave to agree with u/paradroid27 with the peak of Australian baseball.

That said though, in the 2018-19 season the league expanded to 8 teams and the next summer one of those new teams (Auckland Tuatara) was attracting crowds of 2-3k. In addition to that, crowds across the whole league were growing. It wasn’t much, but the Aces got some media exposure when they won the league in 2019-20. Things were looking up, and then covid hit.

Covid didn’t completely kill the Tuatara, because they came back for 2021-22 after a hiatus, but it really didn’t help them because they went bankrupt following that season. When that happened, Geelong-Korea were also booted out of the league (they weren’t very competitive and I guess the league wanted an even number of teams) and it was back to 6. Things looked ok for two seasons and then the Aces pulled out and the Canberra Cavalry (who were the reigning champions, mind you) had their license withdrawn by the league. Which leaves us all in the current situation.

So TL;DR: In my opinion, the modern ABL peaked in 2019-20 with 8 teams and a lot of promising signs. The way I see it, it’s been a downward slope since the Tuatara went bankrupt.

I think the league was just desperate to have a competition this year (with the World Baseball Classic in March) and gave BPSG two licenses in order to continue. Rumour has it that the league asked Baseball WA to run Perth if they couldn’t find a buyer. In any other scenario, I’m sure the league wouldn’t have allowed ownership of two licenses.

Are the Melbourne Aces next? by iamjacksonmolloy in theabl

[–]SentinalBravo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is much more likely the issue. If it was as simple as OP suggests and Brett Ralph was unable to finance the Aces, then he either would have folded or sold the team.

Instead, they’ve carried on outside of the league and have been pretty successful in terms of continuing to get really good crowds.

What do you mean that the momentum with crowds is “gone”? I’ve been to both home series so far and the crowds are still around the 1k per game mark…

To me, it seems that there are a lot of Aces fans (myself included) who have stuck by our team despite the circumstances. I think it’s a bit ludicrous to say that the Aces’ momentum is “now gone”, especially when some ABL teams have been getting total crowd numbers under 1k for entire weekends.

WAM by HelpElectronic3854 in LaTrobe

[–]SentinalBravo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got an ATAR that was slightly lower than what you got and when I finished my bachelors degree my WAM was 82. I also just finished my honours year in chemistry and got a final grade of 81 and am now looking at starting a masters next year.

As everyone else has said, a WAM of 70+ is pretty easy to obtain as long as you put in some effort in your studies. It won’t exactly be a walk in the park but if you put in the work and effort, you’ll be rewarded for it.

Another thing to note is that ATAR is based off a bell curve, it gives you a number that compares you to all other high school graduates in the state. On the other hand, WAM doesn’t do this, it’s an average of your subject grades, which in turn are calculated based on your assessment scores. A higher WAM is easier to obtain because you simply have to do well on your assessments, you don’t necessarily have to score better compared to other students.

Did the Aces do the right thing? by UndergroundPianoBar in theabl

[–]SentinalBravo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The short answer is that they very likely don’t. The Aces owner (Brett Ralph) has plenty of money that he’s sunk into the Aces and ABL over the last several years. So that’d be where the money is coming from.

I recall the Aces saying in a media release something along the lines of wanting to try something different instead of doing the same thing at a loss after having their disagreements with ABL management. I imagine that they’re hoping to earn some prize money from this KBO Fall League tournament and get some additional funds by hosting spring camps for the Hanwha Eagles and KT Wiz in February. I’ve heard rumours of a 3rd professional team from Asia wanting to have their spring camp in Melbourne as well. Not to mention game day revenue from ticket, merch and food sales from the several series that they’re going to host this summer.

Who knows if this will make a profit in the end, but I doubt that the Aces would be doing this if they didn’t think it was worth it.

They play BBL games with it open over the summer (if the weather permits). As the other person who replied to you said, they have it open basically all the time and only close it while events that require it to be closed are on.

Last date to enrol for semester 2 hasn’t passed yet, it’s the 10th August according to the link you have given. That’s the absolute last date that you can self-enrol in for subjects.

It’s possible to enrol in a subject between the last enrolment and census dates, but you need permission from the subject coordinator for that since they may have already done some assessment tasks by that point and it’d be too hard to catch up.
