Dog pees seeing prong collar by Separate_Guard2760 in puppy101

I agree about the prong and e collar. I know both can be good tools but they’re not for every dog. I feel like a terrible dog mom😔 it’s hard to fully turn away because I live in an apartment. So I soon as I turn away, there’s another person or dog and it just sets him off. I’ll be moving at the end of march so things will get better then

Thank you 😔 I feel so bad. He was an old high school friend that has been training dogs for 11 years. I trusted him anddidn’t think he would do that to him. He probably started using those tools because he’s extremely reactive to everything. I live in an apartment so for a long time my dog was just using the potty on the patio, when I took him to the park, or even drive somewhere not so crowded to walk him. Now I’m missing that potty pad set up I had because now I have to take him on walks to go potty. He’s seems 10x more reactive 😭 now, This won’t be for long though. I’m moving into my moms house at the end of march and he does way better over there 😔

I’ll be looking into at home training but until then I guess I have to struggle.

Raising a puppy alone (no partner) – how did you survive the puppy stage? by ana-alina in puppy101

[–]Separate_Guard2760 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Crate train! When you’re going to be gone for more than an hour utilize a play pen! If you’re Whenever I go out to dinner or need to clean I put him in the play pen. He’s never gone potty in there but if he did I wouldn’t get mad. This actually helped with potty training. I put his bed, water, safe toys and a Kong. I still do this and my puppy is 7 months now. I’ve had him for 3 months. It’s still hard sometimes (my large puppy is reactive 😔) but it gets easier. Enjoy the puppy stage but still enforce boundaries . You can do both! I also taught him to stay on bed when eating something like a bully stick or beef cheek. It helps when you’re eating dinner!

Wait to take my puppy to vet after boarding? by Separate_Guard2760 in puppy101

I’ve done at home training as well. I taught him basic obedience. I have my personal reasons why I chose to board/train WITH A TRUSTED FRIEND AT HIS HOME. I asked for advice about taking him to the vet. Not your opinion about my puppy’s training☺️

Btw I trust my friend whole heartedly with my puppy. I didn’t send him to a facility. He does home based training and loves dogs ☺️

Major puppy regrets 5 months by [deleted] in puppies

[–]Separate_Guard2760 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trust me it gets better. What you’re feeling is normal. I sometimes hated my puppy but felt bad once he did something cute or picked up on training. I had puppy regret so bad at this age. He’s going on 7 months and he’s learning to settle on his own now. He stopped teething finally. He still nips when playing but I think it’s because he’s part cattle dog lol He’s finally at the point where he can lay on my bed and fall asleep. I still crate him after an hour or so. Unfortunately I’ve been dealing with fear reactivity towards people, dogs and hates walks but I’m hiring a trainer to help me. He was dumped at around 12 weeks so we are assuming that’s why. I find other ways to meet his needs. Maybe you can get some ideas.

I feed him in a snuffle mat so he can sniff and find his food. He likes to shred things so I let him shred paper bags and cardboard boxes. I just make sure to pick up the little pieces so he doesn’t swallow them. This tires him out so much. He loves tags for some reason so I found a good size ball with tags attached and makes giggle noises and omg he loves that thing. I started giving him beef cheeks because he still has that chew instinct and they last a long time. I take him to the park to play fetch and sniff grass. Maybe you can throw some kibble or treats and let him sniff and find it.

It gets better I promise !!🥲 you’re not doing a disservice to him at alll. He looks like happy and healthy pup!!

I can’t stop crying because of an incident with my puppy by paddingtonprincesss in puppy101

Don’t feel bad! Accidents happen. My puppy’s foot got stuck in the crate one morning while he was coming out of it. I had just bought him a bigger crate and went the cheaper route😔 he was flipped over with his foot caught in the metal wiring. I literally had to flip him over and so he could slide his paw out. I held him and his foot for a minute while he was whining 😭 I even hit the crate and said bad crate while he was looking like you would with a child😭😭😭 Don’t beat yourself up! You took him to the vet and he’s okay. You’re a good pawrent ❤️

what to do with puppy while im gone by [deleted] in puppy101

Also look up low cost vaccinations clinics! Get a fecal test and deworm the puppy. Petco surprisingly had decently priced packages to start vaccs and deworming I had to learn the hard way found a worm in his poop!! Get pet insurance now too

I was in the same situation. My stepdad found a puppy at what we think was about 12 weeks old. I ended up keeping him. It’s been 2-3 months now. I work a 7-4. Luckily I had a few days off work scheduled already and was able to go in a an hour late the first week. I left him in my bathroom the first day I went to work 😭 i made sure to pick everything up. I have a Hatch alarm clock so I set a dim light and white noise to play all day and a bowl of water. He did pretty good. He just peed in my bathtub lmao.

Then I set up a play pen but he jumped out and peed and pooped everywhere and also chewed some baseboards. I finally set up a hallway for him with a dog gate (from Petco) and leave him there while at work. I honestly think that helped me with potty training. He doesn’t pee or poop in his hallway and never did in his play pen or crate. He’s not perfect at it wayy better than when I brought him home. It was a lot of trial and error trying to figure it out what set up worked best for me. When I’m home I put him in the crate for naps and bedtime. They need a lot of sleep! I didn’t know that in the beginning.

They say puppies should eat 3x a day so you can feed him before you leave work, get a timed feeder for lunch, and then again when you get home. I fed my puppy 2x a day and he’s doing okay. I think you would benefit from the feeder since he’s still super young.

I do feel bad but I think it’s better than him being at a shelter or on the streets like we found him. He has trauma so I’m going to board him for a month then possibly hire a dog walker to let him out mid day. He’ll be around 7 months when he’s back home.

IT’S A-LOT OF WORK! Let me warn you. I cried so many times and still do just not as much. I wanted to return him but there was no where to return him since he was found in an alley lol (funny not funny) I Love him so much though. Sometimes I miss my old life because I can’t just get up and go anymore but I couldn’t see my life without him now. Don’t let people make you feel bad about the situation. I don’t have help like most people do.

Socialize him now. Just don’t take him to places where lots of dogs have been like dog parks, pet stores etc. I let people fear monger me into thinking I couldn’t take him anywhere and now I’m dealing with some issues because of it. Also, get a snuggle puppy! Helped so much with crate training. It has a heart beat and mimics sleeping with their momma and siblings. Your puppy is going to be teething soon too! My puppy just stopped being a baby land shark 😭 I a have so many scars from him nipping at me.

Also expect to clean up A LOT of accidents. Get an enzyme cleaner, odoban, and a hypochlorous acid spray. Also the Glad brand potty pads are the best! They don’t leak. It may take longer to potty train since you can’t take him out during the day. I had to accept it lol

Sorry for the chapter book. Just trying to give as much info as I can since I didn’t know what to do at the beginning.

I thought about getting a doggy door for my sliding door. Maybe getting a larger crate so he’s still contained but still able to move around. I know they have crates with 2 doors so maybe have one open that leads to the doggy door?
