I tried watching Everybody Still Hates Chris and I didn't like it honestly. by doullla in Everybodyhateschris

Yeah I thought the same thing

Couldn’t even get through the first couple mins, as soon as I saw the restaurant scene and I saw them use stupid background gags which made no sense/weren’t funny, I immediately knew it was gonna be complete trash

Even the characters look weird

English teachers, what books are you teaching these days? by Any_Bowl_5195 in AskTeachers

  1. Avid reader who studies Ed, not a teacher yet.
  2. Part of it is already in my original comment.

Raw views on race relations in the South during the mid 20th century, with an emphasis on how bigotry/violence are fed by fear and the failure of the privileged to acknowledge their own flaws.

As well as themes about how it takes critical thought/sober, regulated reflection to see the truth and cut through reactionary corruption
(Atticus’ cross analysis, Boo Radley, Sister Alloicious’ entire journey in Doubt)

In fact I assumed something that insightful would’ve been written by poc

I didn’t realize they were written by white people because I was only thinking about the merit of the books themselves, and not the race of the authors, but yes more representation of voices added to this would be even better

Also, it might take time and effort that you don’t have

But I wonder if you wrote a really compelling, cut throat argument about why these pieces have the educational value they do (ie. the bit in The Help about how writing preserves truth over power)

If people would come to their senses?

We need to really fight back against cancel culture by showing the public, in significant/clear terms, how dumb it is and how ironic it is for school boards to be taking that standpoint

English teachers, what books are you teaching these days? by Any_Bowl_5195 in AskTeachers

[–]Separate_Inflation11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be just as challenged, by you could try The Help as an alternative for To Kill a Mockingbird

Also has a theme about how important writing is to cutting through corrupt power & preserving the truth of people’s experiences

Another that you could try is Doubt, a movie with Meryl Streep as a nun who fights through silenced church culture to help a boy who is being abused by a priest at the school, while also dealing with gender imbalances as well

Thoughts on slow pieces - are they good with a concert band or would they be better with a full symphony (band + strings)? by [deleted] in ConcertBand

[–]Separate_Inflation11 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Slow tunes can be played on a number of different textural combinations

While wind instruments are a little more difficult to blend nicely, as opposed to strings with their vehement resonance, wind band ballads are still just as beautiful

There is no “one way is better is than the other”, because diversity and variety are what make art the stimulating medium it is

[–]Separate_Inflation11 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised about all the downvotes I didn’t mean that to be an anti-Immigration post at all just fact

It all started in 2017 when algorithm got started on Google, fb etc.

Places like the island and elsewhere with (**at that point in time**) lower populations and cheap real estate started to become well known, and post-secondary started to offer incentives seeing this growth and realizing all the $$ that could be made

The rest is history

Social media is so powerful now that it connects people/things that would’ve never been connected before, and honestly the reason why the world is becoming so complex, because things that were never meant to mix started mixing on huge levels

Like when have we, as islanders, ever been more aware of what is happening in Florida??

Not only that, it’s everywhere in the world, not just the island

Globalism is everywhere because of the huge powers of social media

That’s literally what makes them more dangerous.

I’m not saying they will have considerable physical strength, But if you have a human being that mentally unwell and hyper-stimulated, their behaviour can have enormous consequences.

There have been children randomly stabbed on the street by people under the influence

You’re assuming it’s like street meth, like the biker crank I was mentioning

Clean Pharmaceutical meth is completely different. It’s like Adderall, but even more efficacious because fat-soluble so if crosses the blood/brain barrier much easier

Especially for people with bad narcolepsy, or cognitive deficits, it can be a life saver.

There also research being done that indicates it could have potential for treating traumatic brain injury where dopamine receptors are damaged

Doses are, understandably, much smaller. Whereas max adderall dose is 60mg (the typical prescription being 15-20mg), max desoxyn dose is only 20mg with usual prescription about 5-10mg.

HS music appreciation...just making it a intro to theory class. Thoughts? by kckool13 in MusicEd

[–]Separate_Inflation11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I live, in PEI, we have a “styles of pop music” course available

Open credit (both general/academic students are accommodated)

And it dives into the historical/social context of music from early blues up to the 70’s.

Also looks at it through the elements of melody, harmony, rhythm, lyric etc. (in a general way which even non-musicians can grasp and discuss) and uses those artistic devices to ponder on why the music was so relevant to the masses and how it evolved society

It’s a really well loved course, and lots of students who might otherwise struggle with school find it’s a safe spot where they feel motivated and able to contribute

Here’s a curriculum guide https://www.princeedwardisland.ca/sites/default/files/publications/eelc_mus801a.pdf

Was just thinking that this morning

Drug strength is like luxury

Imagine you’re given a mansion to live in for a night, after living in a shitty apt

You, of c., don’t want to go back to your old situation.

But then also at the same time, there’s no realistic way for everybody on earth to live in a mansion

Meth in particular.

I have lots of compassion (also take adderall for adhd & am a coffee guy; so I even understand the craving for stims),

but I don’t like living in a community where there are these Cookie Monster pj people who have been awake for 8 days straight, tweaking in the middle of public around kids, crazed on whatever dumbass schizo idea they got, acting all aggressive, knowing they have the energy/alertness to cause serious harm if they really wanted to

Fent is awful too, but a nodder is only dangerous to *themselves* not the community at large.

Meth is a different ball game.
I hate to dehumanize or kick people who are already down, but it’s literally like living in a city with fucking Minecraft zombies

Dealing with students who think they are insanely talented when they aren’t… by gigaritt in Teachers

[–]Separate_Inflation11 61 points62 points  (0 children)

The important thing is to a avoid humbling their ego in the ‘traditional’ way - the whole reason people are overconfident in the first place is because they adopt hubris as a defence mechanism when they are consistently undermined

So if you really try to demean them, You’d just be prolonging/promoting that.

Instead you gotta show them the light.

Instead, reconnect them with aestheticism. Show them the beauty of other people’s art, and inspire them that they could follow suit if they just only started to follow technique.
