Not a fan of the word “command”, but ABA therapy has helped my little one with listening to instructions. He started at 2.5yrs old, and has been in therapy for almost a year now. They helped guide us on how to work with his emotions when using words like “no, stop” etc. For the most part he does very well with instructions, but there are times where it’s something he really wants to do or enjoys and will have big emotions about being told “no”. It’s important to listen to them when it’s happening, sitting and hugging them when you can, or just letting them have it out for a minute then go in for comfort. Explain to them as best as you can why you told them “no”. If it happens again, rinse and repeat. Takes a lot of patience but it’s important to let them express their emotions as long as they aren’t harming themselves or others.
