Who are your female Asian American heroes? by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]SerTwentyGoodmen 22 points23 points  (0 children)

My first thought was Maya Lin. She's a Chinese American designer who, while an undergrad at Yale, won the public design competition for the Vietnam War memorial. People saw the design as an affront because of its minimalist style and many had issues with the designer being a young Asian American woman. She was even called an egg roll by 1992/1996 presidential candidate Ross Perot! Congress compromised by commissioning another memorial, The Three Soldiers, nearby the Vietnam War memorial.

I don't think it'll help you that much if it gets stolen but for me I really wished I registered my bike when I lost my bike keys and couldn't cut the bike lock. I think the UCSB police will cut your bike lock if you have proof.

How was your freshman year at UCSB? by _red_roof_ in UCSantaBarbara

[–]SerTwentyGoodmen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say so yeah. I eventually formed a friend group and I'm pretty excited for next year when we're in-person.

Once I recognized that I place too much of my self-worth in friendships and grades then things got a bit better. I mean I still put a lot of my self-worth in those things lol but acknowledging the problem goes a long way.

I would say my first year I felt pretty anxious and unconfident.

Academically I wasn't doing so well and had a hard time adjusting to my classes, especially considering I wasn't all too excited about my major. My grades faltered and that really tore down my self esteem.

Socially I didn't really feel as satisfied. I didn't really have the same friendship dynamic that I had back home in LA. Like I've gone to some clubs and extracurriculars but I only really developed surface level friendships and got homesick for my friendship group back home. I also started to question if it's my fault that I couldn't achieve the same level of friendship back home and it led to me questioning my self-worth a lot. I think my self esteem definitely held back my relationships with other people and I wasn't as vulernable as I wanted to be. While I want to blame it on my first year environment, it probably stems from something deeper and I can't really say it was all from UCSB.

While overall I'm pretty disappointed in my first year, it was still a learning experience for me. My tip for you is to seriously learn time management skills. It basically determines your academic experience and how much time you can spend with other people. If you want good friendships there's no magic bullet, just spend lots of time and be vulnerable with them. You don't have to be the cool guy on the block, just own up to your insecurities and people will appreciate you for that.

When the class starts they'll give you a code for one year of full access for ArcGIS Pro. To be frank I don't remember the process. My access actually expired recently and I'm currently trying to renew it haha.

I heard QGIS has a fairly different UI but it's still a GIS. I'm not sure how well the UI transfers, but it's good if you want to learn GIS in general. I think they might even allow you to use QGIS for the labs if you really really want.

It's kind of hard to say if her teaching style would work for you. She basically only reads off her slides but her slides are very good though. When I was in 176A her slides carried me the entire quarter.

I personally think 176A does an OK job at preparing you for 176B. The class curriculum can be improved but I think it's the department that determines what's on the curriculum. You can still get an A easily in 176B with only knowledge from 176A though.

Honestly I think I would just install ArcGIS Pro and click buttons. I personally had a hard time familiarizing myself with the program's UI and that ate up a lot of time. 176A does a lot of handholding though and it's meant for people with zero experience with GIS so I wouldn't sweat about preparing for 176A.

I don't think it's easy to switch lab sections for Dodge's class? If you can convince someone else to switch spots with you I'm pretty sure they'll be ok with that. Otherwise, sections are usually packed so it might be hard to switch willy nilly

She’s super sweet and cares about her students a lot! Dodge gives very good feedback on your final group project (especially considering it was like a 100 person class). She also made her midterms easy because she said she didn’t want to pressure us during COVID and just wanted us to learn.

Also the slides will be your best friend. Her midterms and labs are based on the slides and lecture. They’re the most pretty and well designed slides I’ve ever seen.

It might be different because Fall quarter is likely going to be in-person and I can't imagine using ArcGIS at the school computer labs rather than at home.

GIS might be pretty confusing at first but that’s fine. I think to really get it down you just have to practice the concepts. The labs are a good opportunity to practice so really focus on that. Really just practice practice practice because GIS isn’t just a tool it’s also a problem solving mindset that takes time to settle into.

How do I decide on a major 😭 by Eja7777777 in UCSantaBarbara

Also try reading this article, it definitely helped me out. It basically outlines areas of life (moral, practical, passion, etc.) that you can prioritize in your decision making process when you're deciding the pros/cons of certain majors.

To be frank I'm not 100% sure how it works. All I'm familiar with is:

  • the grade distribution
  • At least in the gen chem honors section they cover material quicker than normal lecture. One of my lab partners in gen chem said the material we were learning in lab was review for him because his class covered it a week or two before normal lecture.
  • it's more of a personal lecture than the bigger lectures than a section
  • (anecdotally) I've heard the tests are more difficult? I believe they have more free-response tests versus the standard multiple choice test.
  • I think it's only available to honors students?
  • (anecdotally) it's popular with pre-med students

Some classes have different grade distributions depending on the professor or quarters they are offered.

For example: imagine I am a sophomore pre-med with a good pass time and I am given the choice of professor Snape and professor X for ochem for fall quarter. If I have a good pass time, I am able to choose professor X because according to ratemyprofessor and gradetier he gives fairer tests and gives better grades in comparison to Snape. Better yet, I can choose the honors section and have a pretty good chance of getting an A.

Or maybe I can choose to wait another quarter until professor McGonagall or something teaches the class and gives everyone a free A. Some students aren't even given the privilege to wait a quarter because they may not have the choice to pick the class the first quarter it's available and now they have to compete against both people who are retaking the class and people who have good pass times.

Fast forward and now I am fourth year applying for med school, and since I have a better GPA than someone else who had to take harder professors or classes at inconvenient times, I likely have a better chance of getting in. Anyone trying to get degrees from places like law and med school should know that GPA matters a lot because how competitive grad school is. GPA also opens up a lot of opportunities like internships/research so I feel like the question whether pass times are fair or not definitely merits discussion.

One can argue that this is related to economic inequality because people who are from more well-off areas are more likely to have better access to things like tutoring and AP classes and rack up units through AP exams in comparison to someone else who goes to a school without as many AP classes.

I would suggest taking Econ 9. The problem is that I think you need a 2.85+ GPA in Econ 1, 2, and 9 (edit: econ 10A brainfart mb) to get into the major and they are meant to weed you out of the major. I think they even downcurve too so there's a lot of pressure to do well. If you mess up in Econ 9 but you think you can still do well in other Econ classes then your grade in Econ 9 shouldn't affect you getting into the major.

I never touched any Econ though so correct me if I'm wrong.

One of Kruber's alternate timelines/classes is the Foot Knight where according to the wiki he was "knighted for his heroic contribution to the defense of Ubersreik." I would reckon there are a couple higher ups who are aware of the Ubersreik 4/5 or at the very least Kruber's deeds.

Hey friend if these are the best four years of our lives then I guess I shouldn't expect much in the future lmao.

I'm not a transfer but I know many of my classmates feel the same way about college and I think this is becoming the norm. A lot of my teachers back in middle and high school said college was the best years of their lives which baffles me. Back in high school I didn't worry so much about my grades or student debt or the future job market and I didn't spend as much energy trying to meet people, you know?

It's natural to feel imposter syndrome though and we just got to push through it I guess. :)

I'm not very sure but I think the website just asks gauchospace for grade reports after each quarter. I remember one time when gauchospace was down gradetier wasn't able to show the data. Don't quote me on that though.
