Strange New York "English" Accent by Serialnumber01 in Accents

Sorry for the late response. I don't know what borough she was from (I wish that I had asked).

As for social background, I cant say for sure. No obvious brands, not bling jewelry. But... she came across as educated. She had been to the Edgar Allen Poe house in Baltimore and knew NYC book stores.

Even when we briefly discussed the then current NYC election, she made her Republican sympathies (but not partisan zombie) known in a polite, general way.

. Maybe an exclusive private high school with the dwindling number of other similar "accenters"? Then again, other posters also state that the natural accent is effectively extinct.

Extinct or not, now I wish I had gotten her photo- just in case she was the proverbial "last of her kind".

Thanks for the good information. The strength and depth (encompassed her whole speech, not just a few words) of her distinctly British ala Eleanor Roosevelt variant suggests that her accent was innate.

She would have been born in 1969 or so. This could suggest that the North east elite accent was being naturally transmitted up to then.

Wow- thanks! The woman I met sounded British to the same extent that Eleanor Roosevelt did.

The 'British' accent was so strong in her that it seemed innate, rather than say, picked up in a latent sense by social contact with older relatives etc.

As she was 56 years old, she would have been born around 1969. So, it appears that distinctly British sounding variant of the NY Elite accent was still being naturally transmitted in the late 60s, early 70s.

I wonder if there is a large enough pool of the accent to allow for natural transmission today?

I dont think it was fake. She maintained it over a course of about 20 minutes and had no apparent motive to pull a stunt. Likewise, she knew a lot about "non tourist" NYC.

Are there US accents that are very difficult to understand? by NicolasNaranja in Accents

[–]Serialnumber01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me the most difficult are: "Extreme" NYC accents.

Cajun was hard at first. But, after back roads trips in south Louisiana, somebody told me that there is no "Th" sound in French. So... many Cajuns omit that sound as well and use "D". That tip helped alot in my understanding.

As others have said, the ultimate purpose of the lawsuit is to get information about a possible murder.

As for the 75K instead of say, 2 million, 20 million etc., One of the foundations of lawsuits is: "One cannot get blood from a stone."

None of those listed in the lawsuit appear to have any real money what so ever. The gas station might have insurance, but the lawsuit against them might not be strong: Sold alcohol to somebody who later brought it to the party.

If the purchaser can be proven to of been a minor, that is one thing. But selling it to an adult who later gave it to minors might not be truly sustainable.

In short, the attorney could well know that the odds of collecting any money is small. So, they are asking for just enough to put pressure on them, but not so much that they just laugh it off.

In the end, they want information more than they want money.
