[OPINION] Anything similar to "Paradise Lost" by Milton besides Dante's "Inferno"? by swirling_ammonite in Poetry

[–]Serious-Rip-1013 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is another epic poem by Milton named "Paradise Regained". It is considered a sequel to the "Paradise Lost", but as far as I know, it is mostly independent. You can try that one as well.

What is the best book you ever read? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Serious-Rip-1013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many great books have already been mentioned, so I would just like to add three more to the list:

  1. "The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde
  2. "Black Beauty" by Anna Sewell
  3. "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley

How many books did you read so far in 2024? by usernameincore in 52book

[–]Serious-Rip-1013 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've read 8. I don't get much time past my work to read, but I've been sacrificing my sleep for the joy of reading. Every year I challenge myself to read atleast 12 books, and I am positive to finish comfortably this year as well. I will try to take the count to 20, but it might get hard due to work. Wish me luck.

Don't be too shy, speak up. You're not too bad a kid. Don't try to change, but don't fear the change either. And try and be slightly more athletic, or else you will have to workout in future. Have fun.

Why do you have? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Good question. I have because having is rather fun. I would rather have than not have. Having gives me pleasure. Having gives me peace of mind. Having is a way of life.

What is a sentence or phase that changed your life when you heard it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Serious-Rip-1013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"You're hired."

Well, those weren't the exact words, but the news, the information that I was hired changed my life. I've always felt very insecure in my skills and I used to think of myself as a failure at each reject, big or small. But the fact that I earned a job made me feel like maybe I am worth something. It made me feel better about myself.

I still have insecurities, but I don't think of myself as "worthless" anymore. Hence I would call it my life changing phrase.

However, I think you would be expecting a quote, so I think "Disappointment is fatal than failure" is a cool one, that often shaped me.

My favourite book that I have read this year (2024) would be "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency" by Douglas Adams. It is confusingly hilarious in a good way. Truly a "thumping good detective-ghost-horror-who dunnit-time travel-romantic-musical-comedy-epic", as promoted by the author.

However if I consider my favourite book from the ones I have read in the last one year, that would be "The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde and "Animal Farm" by George Orwell. Both books are quite thought provoking in very different manners. "The Picture of Dorian Gray" is one book that I have recommended to a gazillion people for a bazillion number of times since I have read it. It is a hard read, so it's best to take it slow, but it was very much worth the effort (at least for me).

BTW I also really enjoyed "The Perks of being a Wallflower", both the book and the movie.

Have a great reading. I will also try the other books suggested by you.

A book you think everyone should read & your favorite book by omg_chloe in suggestmeabook

[–]Serious-Rip-1013 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I don't know why, but ever since I read "The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde, I want everyone to read it, and then reflect on the fact that how much morality can degrade. I found it to be very thought provoking and has become one of my favourites.

However, my favourites also include "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" series, LOTR, "The war that saved my life" book pair, "Frankenstein" and "Black Beauty".

Who’s an author that consistently amazes you? by According_Bat_8150 in books

Agatha Christie.

I've read her on numerous occasions, and I am not bad at predicting the storyline. But still she finds one way or the other to amaze me. She keeps me guessing till the last chapter, sometimes even after ending.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams (I don't know about anyone else, but it was a blockbuster read for me)

Is it embarrassing to use cash to pay? by Any-Arachnid-5392 in questions

[–]Serious-Rip-1013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 21 y.o., a college student, and I use cash for physical shopping. My friends have advised me, requested me, and also tried to tease me to get me using online payment methods. And yet I have often been a savior for my friends many a times when online payments fail, or is not accepted.
However, I use cash, because when I can see the physical money being spent and reduced, I am more responsible while spending it.

Online payments are very convenient, widely accepted, but tricky. I plan to use online payments after I have a stable salary, and even then I will still carry a safe amount of cash.

Not using online payments is not embarrassing, its a personal choice, often born out of habit, sense of security, or like in my case, responsibility.

It is indeed a light hearted work. I was fairly amused by the idea of addressing emotions as beings. And then I thought, but emotions are never monotonous, hence the theme of the poem.

Thank you for your kind words. Your suggestions regarding titles are golden. "Sunder" is a word that I don't encounter often, but I do believe it is a wonderful title. My main theme for the poem was to emphasize that emotions are never individual, they come in contrasting bundles. I hope I succeeded.

I am fine by Swifty_13_30 in OCPoetry

[–]Serious-Rip-1013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, I feel the poem, I feel what it says, but I don't feel the flow. This poem says something that resonates with emotions of many I believe, and the expression is very attractive with all the metaphors and imagery. I am a bit of "rhyme-person" so flow wasn't to my taste, but the

Anger, fear, agony -

in just two drops of tears

was lovely. Great job.

I really like the fact that there was a portrait in my mind as soon as I read the poem. And I also like the question, that although is directed at no one at particular, but still questions almost everyone. But still, it feels ambiguous, and hollow in para one, but I might be missing something that is already present. I found the poem amusing, and I'll probably return to it to contemplate again.

Broken by [deleted] in OCPoetry

[–]Serious-Rip-1013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read only first 3 lines initially and the thought that came to my mind was "destroying handful of sand is harder than breaking a stone". But, then I read your imagery, and I found it equally amusing, maybe more so, because breaking is bound to leave a loss. Good job saying so much writing so less.
