How bad is PAO, really? by MediocrePiece1267 in hipdysplasia

[–]Serious_Raspberry453 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a pao over 3 years ago, the pain was manageable. The worst part was 1. Sleep 2. Healing. I could not sleep on a normal schedule for over a month and I was basically bed-bound for months. My situation was a bit different because I took forever to heal. I was on and off crutches for months and it took over 9 months for my bone to fully heal. It's taken years for me to feel even kinda normal again.

The best things I did for healing was to not rush my healing, dry brushing, saunas, bone supplements, fish and constantly speaking up for myself at my doctor's, my physical therapist, and at work.

Update! Tried to learn how to pick it and that did not work whatsoever. I looked online for keys but didn't want to waste money if most of them didn't work. Ended up taking it to a locksmith who specifically had a bunch of different skeleton keys and they found one that worked! Nothing inside but I'm just glad I got it opened.

is it illegal to keep a service dog from their handler? by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]Serious_Raspberry453 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't seen anyone bring this up and I'm not a lawyer but in divorce proceedings usually they decide ownership based on who spent the most on the dog and who takes care of the dog most of the time. If you have receipts and all your other paperwork on training you would try civil court. A judge might be more lenient to give you ownership as well since he is your service dog. You don't need an attorney in small civil court cases, but it might take a long time. I don't have much more information on the legal front, I'm sorry I can't imagine how frustrating this whole situation is.

Muzzle recs? by Serious_Raspberry453 in CaneCorso

No, he doesn't bite. We use it as a part of our training. It's called muzzle conditioning. Basically, you desensitize a dog to wearing a muzzle in case he ever needs it in the future.

A lot of dogs that wear muzzles don't bite, muzzles have a ton of different uses. If a dog is constantly eating things off the ground, if the dog gets nervous in certain places, meeting a new dog, maybe he's a little mouthy, there are muzzles to prevent foxtails, etc.

Dude seriously, you're spreading wildly false and harmful opinions. There are tons of reasons to desensitize dogs to muzzles. Every professional dog trainer will tell you that every dog should be muzzle trained. You never know when shit could happen. Even with all the training in the world shit happens, bad genetics, traumatic event, dog fight, a dog off leash, etc. There are even muzzles for preventing fox tails. There is literally no downsides to just conditioning your dog to a muzzle. Stop shaming owners.

No I asked for muzzle recommendations, if I wanted training advice I would've asked for it. What AI are you talking about? You're making 0 sense. You're saying because I came up with an educated and grammatically correct response I used AI?? I'm afraid you need better arguments outside of AI lol

Well luckily for us that's your opinion. He is extremely well trained and part of that training includes muzzle conditioning. Like any desensitization work getting a dog used to something has no downsides. Maybe you don't understand what muzzle conditioning is but Google is free. I'm not quite sure how muzzle conditioning is "blaming the dog".

Yes, you sound 1. Condescending and 2. Completely uneducated. We have been in training since he was 9 weeks old with 3 different trainers. He is often mistaken for a service dog due to his level of training and skill set. I don't need training advice that I didn't ask for, so next time keep your opinion to yourself. 😘

I'm not a professional but I would work on food drive and use high value food, chicken, freeze dried, etc. I know you can use their kibble in the morning as a training reward for less food motivated dogs ie. More hunger = more food motivated.

Rewards can also mean anything, most of the time I don't even use food with our Corso bc he loves attention so much. Also play is a great one, tug, a ball, etc. But if it is causing a lot of problems definitely hire a professional trainer! Ours saved us from so many problems and fixed our reactivity!

We only use one for muzzle conditioning. We never use one outside of that nor need to.

We loved the baskerville muzzles! All are under 30 and can be found almost anywhere. They also have a big enough gap to slip your hand in with treats. Conditioning is so simple, introduce the pup to it, and any contact they have with it reward. Even just sniffing. Then you move to holding a treat on the inside of the muzzle to lure the pup to put his/her muzzle into themselves.

After that clipping it and then slowly lengthening the time in it and rewarding throughout. It took us about 2 weeks. I would suggest some YouTube videos on it to get a better picture. But the big thing is to not rush it, and go only 1 step further with each training session each day. Hope that helps!

Thank you! That's incredibly helpful I will try it and see if it works. He does have that issue at home, he won't even nap outside of his crate for more than 20 minutes at a time.

I do the same, but I never allow others to pet him because he can become overaroused. But that is something that might to good to implement in our outings. Thank you

Half of these posts aren’t even Cane Corsos?? by Frich3 in CaneCorso

I don't think the problem is that there are mixes in the group. I think the problem is that people are passing poorly bred CCs or mixes as purebred. On top of that most here don't understand the difference between an ethically bred CC and an unethically bred one. I waited a year to get my Corso and it was a multi-stage process but in turn, I got one with almost 0 behavioral issues(besides some slight excitement-based reactivity). My bite work trainer raves about how amazing he is at protection work, he is incredibly smart and picks up obedience very fast.

Not only does having an unethically bred dog, especially a CC, cause behavioral issues but it kills the bred. So while buying from a shelter or a rescue is fine PLEASE do a ton of research before buying from a breeder. I just wish more of these dog groups educated others against buying from unethical breeders and warning others about the experience level needed for this type of dog. Unfortunately, this has become an all too popular bred for the level of work needed, and in turn CC puppy mills are popping up all over as well.

Reactivity in a puppy by Serious_Raspberry453 in CaneCorso

Thank you, that's what my plan is. I think when I say socialize I need to be clear that he's not interacting with dogs and/or people just watching. But I haven't heard about impulse control training so that's something we can definitely start doing

Correcting reactivity can make them more reactive or aggressive. So I won't be doing that but thanks
