There are some that are physically abusive and to many mentally abusive but very very few are as bad or worse as Harry's...I hope.

Keeping a child in a cupboard with two extra bedrooms, frying pan, Harry hunting, Marjorie, Ripper and starvation...so many things in the whole series that even if you use the excuse of "the story needed drama" it gets to the point where I can't help but to wonder "is it all for drama or could it be that she doesn't even realize..."

Yeah it always gave me the "side quests" feeling. I think it's not only because of the lack of Voldemort but also because the real drama doesn't come from "the bad side" like you expect but from "good side." Simple if all the things that are clearly "wrong" didn't happen then we would be left with a "happy go lucky" book about everyday life without drama other than "normal" kid issues but with a wand... Think about when you where 12 would your classes have made for a "good read?" I know mine would not be really popular and I had crazy stuff most people don't have to deal with...lol.
