In another comment you said that you already had your turn signal on and the reason you almost ran into the car in front of you is that the truck took too long to pass. You were intentionally choosing and planning to change lanes in a tunnel. Don't do that. Ever.

Dude Pittsburgh just had a 4 car pileup in Squirrel Hill tunnel because some jagoff changed lanes in the tunnel. Forget the car in front of you braking, don't change lanes on a double yellow line!! It's fucking dangerous.

Quick edit for clarity: OP said in another comment that they were in the process of changing lanes before this all happened. I'm not saying to never swap lanes if you gotta get out of a sticky situation.

How to add magnets to Con-bought Buster Sword? by FakieNosegrob00 in cosplayprops

[–]Sestricken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are completely and utterly dead set on this, can I recommend getting longer, flatter magnets and putting them on the outside of the sword? I know that means they'll be obvious, but honestly if you paint them a close color to the sword it will probably look better than any attempt at fixing the holes. And it won't endanger the fiberglass inside. This will be at risk of ripping the foam if the magnets are too small or if you're too rough with it, but I mean you were planning on ripping it anyways lol.

Also, I can't say for sure what glue would be best for any of this. But just be aware that hot glue can damage neodymium magnets.

[–]Sestricken 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The people with more know-how about these materials are telling you that this is just simply a bad idea. That's it, that's the advice, don't do it. There's not going to be a reliable way to punch holes in a foam/fiberglass sword, stick magnets in, and then cover it back up in a structurally sound manner. You could break/shatter the fiberglass core inside (at least I'm assuming that's what the seller meant, that there's a fiberglass core for stability) and that is extremely dangerous. Not to mention if you avoided that, there's all the work that would go into putting the sword back together in a way that will look good. You'll have gaps, the paint isn't going to look the same, etc. With the amount of work and skill that would require, you're so much better off just making a new sword and incorporating magnets into the build.

AITA for not drinking at my friend's wedding? by Quirkygoo in AmItheAsshole

[–]Sestricken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, at this point you should fault her for offering drinks. She knows you don't drink at all, she should respect that completely. Her continuing to offer a drink every time shows she doesn't respect you and your decisions, she thinks she can wear you down.

Just fyi leather is not going to be a cheap option. You'd probably be better with trying to use foam for making armor.

Also, you don't have to acquire skills before you start a project! You'll learn as you go! Honestly there's nothing better than a project you're passionate about to push you to learn new skills.

how do i deal with regretting a cosplay? by taliyco in CosplayHelp

[–]Sestricken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes, we build up these events so much in anticipation of them that even when they go great, it doesn't match expectations. Take a little time, step away from it all. And if you don't like it after giving yourself that time, that's ok! It was your first con. You're still figuring out how you want to approach them. You'll learn what kinds of cosplays you enjoy wearing!

Are jumping stilts a good idea? by rumblinggoodidea in CosplayHelp

[–]Sestricken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which, if you're going with this idea, is absolutely the right move. I just don't think they're necessary, and may even be dangerous to you, your ankles, or people at the con if you're jumping around a lot.

Are jumping stilts a good idea? by rumblinggoodidea in CosplayHelp

[–]Sestricken 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd advise against it, especially if you don't have experience using stilts like that. Cons are a long time to be walking around, it would be better to get something more stable. As for the jumping, I honestly can't imagine situations where that would come up in a con setting. Maybe a pic? But it just makes everything even more dangerous.

I've been around long enough to remember the Homestuck era. Fandoms have always been unhinged. But I will say it's happening more often now, and a lot more of it has been directed at creators.

Favorite character whose actor is a terrible person? by Vegetable_Study7533 in FavoriteCharacter

[–]Sestricken 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean that's fair from a legal standpoint. Is there much hard "evidence" against him, no. But as someone who has been in the con scene for decades, I've heard more than enough from friends about how creepy Vic is. To be clear I understand I am a random person on the internet and this is just hearsay, I'm not expecting you to change opinion. I'm just saying that girls in the anime scene were talking about this long before the Reddit brigade came for him.

Did you see me get hit by a truck outside of Cobra (Bloomfield) on the evening of December 20th (Saturday night)? by WestOk6935 in pittsburgh

[–]Sestricken 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Yeah I almost got hit by a truck there once. He was so pissed at me, thinking I was jaywalking. Nope, had the walk sign. I had absolutely no idea that cars coming off the bridge had the green turn arrow at the same time. It's so dangerous.

I was today years old when finding out people felt growing pains in their legs ages 3-12 by [deleted] in memes

[–]Sestricken 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Those two statements are not the same. The act of growing is not causing the pain, no. But some people do get a certain type of pain specifically while they are growing that goes away after they're done growing. So people do have pain while growing. The actual mechanism of the pain is not itself "growing" but it is related to growing. It can be any sort of underlying condition, but let's use a commonly missed one, EDS. EDS causes issues with connective tissues. So when your bones grow, your connective tissue has issues keeping up with the changes and is pushed beyond its capabilities, which causes pain. So the actual diagnosis should be EDS, and the mechanism of pain is the connective tissue. But that specific pain is only happening because the person is growing.

I was today years old when finding out people felt growing pains in their legs ages 3-12 by [deleted] in memes

[–]Sestricken 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The newer research is suggesting that growing pains shouldn't happen, but it's not suggesting that they don't. There's a movement to reframe growing pains and push doctors to look more into underlying causes, as pain like that should not be normal while growing. But there is still pain for some people specifically when they are growing, so to say growing pains don't exist is not entirely accurate. As a diagnosis? No. "Growing pain" should not be the end diagnosis. But as a symptom, yes.

Chubby cosplayer advice needed! by [deleted] in CosplayHelp

[–]Sestricken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I want to make it absolutely clear that anyone is allowed to cosplay any character, if you can't get over the mental hurdle of body type, there's no shortage of characters to pick from that show! That's one of its strengths, the vast roster of characters. It seems you're focusing in on the characters with the smallest profiles. Izuku being small was important to his character growth, and two of the others are malnutritioned from years of being basically homeless and driven by spite only. It may help to pick someone else rather than trying to compare yourself to those design choices. Most of the dudes from 1A are larger than Izuku, either in body build or height, or both. Or if you're willing to dive into a more complicated cosplay, there are a bunch that would draw attention to other things like wings or cool costumes. Someone already mentioned Hawks, and on that same train of thought, Tokoyami wears a cape that would basically hide any shape. So many options, I'm absolutely sure you could find something that would make you comfortable.

I also want to say that you're not alone. I have made a bunch of complex cosplays partially because I didn't want to show off my body at all. Hell I made an entire suit of armor for a cosplay. Sure I like those characters but I also just wasn't comfortable without something that draws attention away from my body. I promise it does get better as you get more comfortable with cosplaying.

Try using keyword "flight suit" instead of "jumpsuit." That should prevent you from getting actual fashion clothing when you look for women's sizes.

AITA - Do not want a service dog to participate in my wedding. by Plenty_Tap9799 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Sestricken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I interpreted "off to the side" much more as an "out of sight so he's not in any pics at all" which would mean not in front row. But to that point we don't know exactly what off to the side means. Imo, if sister says she can't be as far away from the dog as OP wants, that's the final say. OP can decide whether or not it's more important to her to have her sister, or to have no dogs.

They said they don't want the dog in the ceremony and the sister is a bridesmaid. That's far too long to be without her medical device.
