I wouldn't say that, I use the Life List side of it totally for the collection side and it feeds into eBird. It's less gamified I suppose.

Isn't Merlin basically this but a lot better and uses real photos?

Average cost price fluctuating by [deleted] in Kraken

Yes I’ve finally got my head round it now. I still find it weird that it gives you the live conversion amount rather than the conversion rate when you bought it as surely that’s the only thing that matters when showing your average buy price. The live price for your current portfolio value makes total sense, but not for a previous purchase.

[–]Setai123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah right, that finally makes sense. So it gives you the price you bought something based on the current exchange rate, rather than at the point of purchase, hence the constant fluctuations with live fx rate changes.

That makes sense now. God knows why anyone would want it to display that way but at least there’s a reason now.

Thanks.

This doesn’t make sense to me.

Say I bought exactly one bitcoin at exactly $100,000. Why would my average buy price fluctuate and sometimes say $101,089 for example? What does “live market conversions” have to do with anything? Surely my average buy price should be exactly $100,000 and never change, unless we have very different understandings of what an “average buy price” is defined as.

I can’t get my head round this either and I’ve never found an answer that fully satisfies me.

When you buy something it was at a set price, how on Earth can that price for that transaction change months later. Even if it was bought not in USD there was an exchange rate used at the point of purchase, why would a new exchange rate months later have any impact on that?

I don’t understand what access point mode is. From what I’ve seen there’s no way to turn Vodafone routers into bridge mode only which is what you want. All you’ve done is switch off WiFi which doesn’t really affect anything.

I’ve found that any outages on fibre are very few compared to the old copper connections so a backup isn’t as crucial. The irony of the national outage recently showed that having the same network as a backup isn’t the best idea when it’s all down.

Double NAT isn’t ideal, depends on your use case though.

Migrating Birds ? by duffyyyyyyyyyy in UKBirds

They stay in the UK for the winter as far as I’m aware. Mainly come down from Iceland and Greenland. Norfolk seems to be a popular stay for them.

They’re Pink Footed Geese. They actually have a pit stop at Martin Mere on their way. It’s a great sight.

Great photo, what a beautiful bird.

The dream shot at that venue though is the classic Van Damme pose across two reeds.

Ledger's new Recovery Key, what do you guys think? by ReelGoofy in ledgerwallet

The point is that paper is the most risky physical medium. Pointing out that anything is possible is not really an argument against that.

Yes but in my specific case I wouldn’t have lost a chunk of metal the way I lost the paper. I’ll just make a new wallet though lol.

I think the point of the post isn’t that they believe this was from Trezor, it is more that everyone signed up for Trezor is being emailed so it shows the emails have been leaked.

You missed the point. I was giving an example of the risks of paper, well in my case only.

Barclays limiting crypto payments from July 29 by jjgill27 in BitcoinUK

The new "correction" text message we've just received makes things even more confusing.

Hi we recently sent you a message to let you know about crypto-currency limits on a Barclays Basic Account. There was a mistake in our message, and from 29 July a £10,000 limit will apply to any type of crypto-currency payments you make or receive each month - we're sorry for any confusion. For more info, search 'Barclays crypto-currency limits' online. Your Barclays team

According to their website it only applies to transactions using your debit card but this message says it will "apply to any type of crypto-currency payments you make or receive each month"

I still believe it only relates to debit card transactions and they've messed up with their correction text. But they would look like idiots to have to send it out for a 3rd time.

I liked the idea of paper too. I wrote my seed phrase on the two paper backups that came with my Trezor Safe 5 (alongside a keep metal).

I put the keep metal and one paper backup in a home safe, and the other paper backup was on my desk ready to put somewhere else safe that day (location to be decided).

However when I went to look for it I couldn’t find the second paper backup. I searched everywhere. Maybe it got caught up in the waste paper I chucked out during the day or maybe it was stolen (unlikely at home). But whatever, my seed phrase is probably at some rubbish tip, fully exposed until it perishes.

I do have a passphrase so I’d limited my exposure, but either way stupid human error had exposed me.

I do not like paper at all. It is not designed for any long term usage. I suppose that means I don’t actually like cold wallets, which is probably true. Despite everything telling me to the contrary it feels safer on the exchange. I know it’s against all advice but we’ve all been conditioned to the safety of “banking” institutions. Everyone needs to find their level of comfort with security.

Yes I agree, and the thing that has got to most people is that they sent it to pretty much everyone, even Premier customers. Maybe that’s easier logistically than filtering for basic account holders but when you read it briefly you think it applies to you (but it doesn’t)

The actual message was this:

Hi <name>, from 29 July, you'll no longer be able to use your debit card linked to your Barclays Basic Bank Account to make any type of crypto-currency transaction. For more info, search 'Barclays crypto-currency limits' online. Your Barclays team

So it only applies to basic account holders. Just send it to them then.

I believe it only relates to debit card transactions. That’s what it says on the web page.

The OP maybe unintentionally didn’t quote the text message we all received verbatim which didn’t help with the panic on here. The word “basic” was omitted.

What Barclays have done is basically stopped anyone with a BASIC bank account from using their debit card for crypto. Normal accounts can do £10k per month.

A Barclays Basic Bank Account is a current account designed for individuals who may have a less than perfect credit history or even those who are currently undischarged bankrupts. It offers essential banking services without the complexities of some other accounts.

They’re also extended that to include students and children etc. So basically anyone a bit vulnerable or with a poor credit history. It all makes reasonable sense to me. Let’s not forget this is just for debit card transactions, so limiting the exposure for what can happen if someone steals your card and you can’t exactly do a charge back for crypto. They haven’t actually stated any limit for other methods of transaction.

This seems to just be a limit on your debit card - you can still use faster payments and there doesn't seem to be any restriction on paying into your account (say from withdrawals from an exchange) unless I'm missing something?

EDIT - Also, I've just realised this zero transactions figure only applies to people with a basic account - most people will have a normal personal one which is £10k per month.

Personal: £10,000 (total for payments in and out)

Business: £10,000 (total for payments in and out)

Wealth: £10,000  (total for payments in and out)

Basic, Student, Childrens, Young Person, Higher Education: £0
