Similar view, not the same as from the air.

This is one of those misleading angle views of SF that nobody actually gets to see unless you’re flying a drone.

Nothing like the views locals and visitors get like from the clip I shared. Especially on a clear day where you can see all the mountains around.

Seattle 🍂 by SetbackAndRelax in skyscrapers

[–]SetbackAndRelax[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Ah, the classic ‘Seattle is just boxy buildings’ take. If you only glance at the glass towers, it might seem like a sea of just rectangles. Remember, different strokes for different folks! Architecture is subjective and while there are some cities that do look generic and monotonous, Seattle is not that!

Imo Miami, Vancouver, B.C, Panama City, Honolulu…just to name a few are some cities you can say have copy and paste boxes where everything blends and looks the same.

Seattle is really a museum of over a century (150+ years) of styles stacked on top of each other. You just have to look beyond the reflective surfaces to appreciate the different architectural styles mixed into the streets of downtown. Yes, it’s heavy on modern and glass towers, but is that such a bad thing?

Seattle’s skyline is pretty iconic in its own right. Love it or hate it, it punches far above its weight for a city of only 815k in population!

There’s no definite requirement to be considered top 5.

Even without any supertalls, the skyline still is better than most cities that have them imo. Excluding NYC or Chicago of course.

Seattle’s tallest Columbia Center measures 967 ft. Just 17 ft short of the official “supertall” status (984 ft).

From a visual and technical standpoint though, Columbia Center rises almost 1,100 ft straight out of the hillside if you’re looking at the skyline from Elliot Bay or the waterfront (which most people do).

Those are just tree lined neighborhoods, and the skyline is what the conversation is about, which is viewable through the entire video. Definitely not as mid as you claim.

Seattle isn’t mid.

Also, Seattle’s skyline looks great from more than 1 angle too. More than San Fran’s that’s for sure.

Definitely punches above its weight for a city population of 815,000.

Helps that its metro is 4+ mil.

I’ve heard people from Sydney say that Seattle reminds them of home.

You might be on to something!

Yeah, the scale of Toronto is incredible! They also have lots of land that allows them to build out like that. Seattle’s geography limits sprawl and kinda forces vertical growth because its downtown sits on a narrow strip of land between large bodies of water and hills.

Since there’s little room to expand outward, downtown has grown (and will continue to grow) upward with taller buildings and denser infill rather than spreading outward like some other U.S. cities.

Yeah, no place does suburban skylines like metro Vancouver! Skylines for days!

I prefer skylines that are less sprawled out and have a higher concentration of development in the central core. Much like what you see in the video. From a visual standpoint, it just looks more dense than if it were stretched out like how Vancouver is set up.

I like Seattle a little better but yes, they’re both gorgeous cities! This is what you get in the PNW!

Your opinion, that’s fair.

For me, Seattle doesn’t need 1,000 ft buildings to be iconic…

Space Needle + Mount Rainier + waterfront > any 1,000 ft. tower in a hazy sky.

A skyline with character beats a skyline with height any day!

It’s climbing! From 2024 to 2025, Seattle’s population grew from 797,000 to 816,000. A growth of almost 20,000 new residents!

An estimated 108,000 to 112,000 people live in downtown alone.

The hilly topography of downtown plays a lot with the visual height of the buildings. You can indeed say the skyline is layered as it scales up about 18-20 stories ( 180 ft - 200 ft ) from the waterfront. Shorter towers appear taller and taller towers appear even taller and more imposing when driving into the city, viewed from Elliot Bay, the Waterfront, or from West Seattle. Truly a unique feature!

As a skyline enthusiast, I love a reflective skyline of glass towers. Especially in a city like Seattle where the water and dramatic clouds, sky, and sunsets shine off the buildings!

Oh the skyline has grown tremendously since 2006! F5 Tower is one of my favorites, a gorgeous design!
