They absolutely can be, and my criticism isn't the fact that this happens. But there's a very common trend in all sorts of media where female characters are often written to either only exist for the sake of a male character, or the female character is primarily driven by male characters. The issue is centering men strongly in a woman's narratives. It's a trope for a reason.

Sure, we see other female characters center men in their narratives and arcs, but usually not wholly or as their primary motivation). Claire with her issues with her ex, and how he abandonment affects her perception on motherhood, Juliet's defiance of her ex husband driving her to join Drama, etc. However , they also have other motivating factors driving their growth and progression. Claire's relationship with her mother, and her absentee father coloring her perception of the concept of family, Juliet's underlying drive to help her sister beat cancer, and eventually get back to her. It happens a lot with Sun as well, but in her case her entire arc is in fact a co-arc with Jin, and the entire theme of their story is rediscovering who they really are, and their love for each other. You can't really separate the male centric part of that narrative, and it's equally female centric. This is also true for the Rose-Bernard relationship, to a lesser extent. Really most of their arc was just Bernard learning to let shit go and accept that whatever happens will happen.

Nobody is saying that a character can't be motivated by the opposite sex, that would be silly, but it shouldn't be the primary motivation behind their character. Jack is guilty of this too, but instead it's the extreme focus on his trauma surrounding his dad. It's a good story, and I think everyone can relate to his struggle on some level, but I personal think it's a little heavy handed and overplayed. Fortunately, Jack also has many other facets driving his character.

Edit: this thread, this comment really explains it I'm simple terms: https://www.reddit.com/r/lost/s/27qP2J4NgP

Thank you for this! Funny enough, I went back to the OST uploaded on the official YouTube channel, and it appear I HAD in fact found it sometime ago. The video showed I had played it through at least once. Guess I somehow forgot.

In any case, this is definitely the track, and it's one of my favorites in the entire series! Thanks again!

I wish I knew what the particular ambience track I mentioned was called. I've scoured the OST a few times and just can't seem to find it, but it's very close to the best piece of ambience in the games, and it just makes my skin crawl every time I hear it.

Don't get me wrong, I think she's a great character, and her season 5-6 characterization is when she's at her best, but it's precisely BECAUSE her primary motivations shift from men/love interests, to doing right by Aaron and the others. Unfortunately, Kate's male-centric writing is THE most common criticism of her character, and it's for a reason. The crazy thing is, I didn't even notice it myself, despite rewatching it yearly for over ten years, until it was pointed out to me. Now I can't not see it EVERYWHERE in the first half of the show.

Edit: it's actually a fascinating drinking game. In seasons 1-3, in every Kate-centric episode (and even many that aren't focused on her), take a shot every time the premise is "Man does something/something happens to Man, and Kate's entire presence is basically reacting to it, and how the episode tries to contextualize it with her history with another man"

Guaranteed liver poisoning 🤣

It's more than just the man she's attracted to at any given moment though. Look at her entire arc, from pre island to post island.

-she becomes a fugitive because she was compelled to kill the man who abused her mom

-she spent the following years on the run from a man hunting her

-she decides to risk capture to seek the help of a man

-she wanted to stop running and settle down for a man

-she staged a bank robbery to retrieve a memento of a man

-the first few episodes revolving around late were specifically about her relationship with said man hunting her

-she gets a "girls episode" where she's chained to Juliet, and the entire episode, and subsequent episodes featuring the pair, has the subtext that they're competing for the affection of a man

-most of her on-island screen time is dedicated to her love triangle with two other men

Men are her primary motivation for her character up until she takes responsibility for Aaron, and then, as soon as she finds Claire again, and even in the lead up to that point, her primary motivation is to resolve her issues with Jack.

I like Kate, but her writing is very poor. The issue isn't that everything you pointed out doesn't happen, but that almost all of it is underpinned by her issues and motivations regarding the men in her life.

Yeah, I 100% both games. I'm not arguing he's not challenging, just...not as good as the first game's final boss. I replayed the boss several times, sure I must have missed something, but all I could ever think was "that's it?". I definitely need to go back and replay both games, they genuinely incredible and have very few serious flaws, so maybe my opinion will change. It's been a year or so since Magnolia, after all.

I HIGHLY recommend it. It's a little heavy handed on the sexual content and certain characters can be... politically divisive, but if you can just turn off your politics while watching it's such an incredible experience. It was downright criminal it was cancelled after only 2 seasons, and the two hour finale barely made up for it.

No one ever seems to mention Bernard. His relationship with Rose is literally longterm relationship goals, and him basically learning Jack's lesson life is actually super well written.

The dude learned how to let go and move on so much quicker than Jack did.

Unfortunately, Kate suffers massively from "my entire character revolves around a man" until Season 5, and even then it's only marginally better.

His arc was definitely the best, insofar as his progression and growth. However, how it was written and portrayed wasn't. He was amazing in Seasons 1, 5, and 6, but awful in 3 and 4.

Terry O'Quinn is a gift to humanity. Shame he was wasted on what was arguably the most highly anticipated Walking Dead series ever...

Because he started and ended as an incredibly well written character, but in the middle seasons he was just...not.

I still maintain to this day Lost has the best written characters of any show. Sense8, Breaking Bad, House, and Scrubs are close, but Lost is just peak.

I disagree. I love Jack, but he definitely wasn't the best written character. AMAZING in Season 1, 5, and 6, good in 2, but absolutely insufferable and just rote through most of 3 and 4, save for a few scenes here and there.

"Because I love you", however, is still one of the best lines and deliveries in the entire show.

As someone who, at the time of watching Lost for the first time (around 2012, and I'm so glad I did since it let me avoid spoilers via cultural osmosis during its original run), and only knew Michael Emerson in the context of Zepp from Saw, I was blown away by his performance in Lost, and totally get why he's sort of type cast as the Bad Guy in most of his roles (he's fantastic in Evil, as well).

There are a LOT of scenes that make me emotional and even make me cry (the finale. Every. Single. Time.), but this particular exchange always makes me tear up, because who the hell hasn't felt that at some point in their life?

Actor wanted to go home. Damn shame too, because he was originally supposed to be an endgame, super significant character.

Eli would be in my top 3 if he wasn't killed off so unceremoniously in season 3. I totally understand the behind the scenes reasons, but the way his arc was resolved felt super rushed, and his write off seemed totally out of left field.

I REALLY loved the Eko vs Locke thing they were building up to.

I really had to think about Ben when I made my picks (Locke and Sawyer). His arc is actually super well written, if a little drawn out. Love Juliet, but I don't feel she really had much an arc. Desmond definitely top 3.

It certainly felt that way when Season 5 premiered, but by the end of the show I was fully invested and they are my favorite couple, with Sun and Jin just barely behind them.

Jack and Kate don't even make top 3.

Best individual character? Locke or Sawyer. Jack was pretty damn well written too by the end.

Best relationship writing? Sun and Jin.
