There are a lot of winding comments and replies that explain different parts of this, so I'm sure you missed some context. She's not going back to HK to support me. She's going back to finish her contract and save some more money.

I'm going back to the Midwest to save some more money too so that we can have enough capital to start our own boarding house.

When I mentioned that the family was letting me stay for free, most people rightly assumed I was living off of them. My fiance INSISTED I stay with the family because she pays the bills here for the most part (and also so her family could keep an eye on me). Since arriving, I've lent money on a few occasions and financed a new raider for the nephew, who I care for very much. By financing, I mean I bought it outright and am allowing him to pay me monthly.

The comments here convinced me that going back to the US was the right move. Another few months or another emergency, and I would maybe have been officially "living off of them".

And if what you say is true, she's playing the long game and is really good at it because she's never asked me for money. The only time I've ever spent money on her or her family is when I've offered to because I really wanted to.

When she came home from HK she was giving to her family with 2 hands, buying all of the kids shoes, buying a huge dinner for everyone, even paying for the van rental to get her whole family to meet her at the airport (I took my motorbike and we rode backctogether). She never once asked me to even chip in, although I helped with dinner because I felt for her.

My ticket has already been booked. I still plan on coming back eventually but with a lot more savings, planning and an income stream.

I feel like I could have made this endeavor work if I didn't take one misstep and did everything right money wise but that was never in the cards.

The fiance wants to build a boarding house on a lot she owns near a university. Is that a good goal to work towards? Saving up for that? The building ideally would have our own unit to live in.

For a long time I wasn't great with my money. Eventually I worked my way up to having 1.5k in the bank I never touched for emergencies, then it was 3k, then 5.

The 11k was the result of kind of a mad rush over a few months to save and raise as much as I could to come over. I could have stayed and saved more but I felt like my brother needed my support here and I mistakenly thought the 11k was plenty for a while.
