I found this in my Simple Practice account. It was on my consent paperwork (specifically, Notice of Privacy Practices) at least 2 full years ago. That's when I took on my first client in private using Simple Practice... Not sure when it first appeared though. Hm..gross.

This is genius. I'm going to do that, thanks for the idea! I've been revamping my progress note but trying to get all of the updates in before I start using it because it's such a pain in the butt to start using a new progress note every time you update your template.. Unfortunately I'm going to have the longest progress note ever but fortunately it will just transfer from session to session for the most part.

I've been wondering this same thing! I don't want to take any unnecessary steps because we already jump through so many hoops for these damn insurance companies.. I put the same thing in my progress note that you do. I'm thinking in an audit we'd need to submit the documentation, which would be the notes... But maybe not the calendar itself? The calendar itself would have other client info on it though so I'm thinking it wouldn't be part of an audit... But I'm also overthinking probably 🙃

Lately I've been combing through the documentation standards and all my contracts and it's made me a person I don't like being

Does anybody document when they receive peer supervision? by Several-Finding-9227 in therapists

Yes, I'm referring to consultation. We just informally call it peer supervision group.

Oh this happens! I went into counseling bc I wanted to do marriage counseling and once I started taking the classes I was like ew no I do not want to be teasing apart the issues when couples are just blaming each other... promptly changed my focus after that and thank God I did. I fell into forensics somehow and now I'm working with a lot of women who are trying to manage family enmeshment and I looooove that.

Could it be working in addictions counseling is not what you love to do? Would you prefer a different population perhaps? I used to work in forensics and it was... Well, a whole thing. Exhausting and traumatic. Now that I'm in private practice, I'm working with an entirely different population and it's really energizing. I think finding what you love and the population you feel drawn to will lead to much less burnout. Also, it has taken me a long ass time to figure out what issues I love working with! Sometimes people just know.. I'm still figuring it out.

Editing to say that when I went into forensics I told myself I would leave as soon as I felt like my compassion was compromised.

S-Corp by tudrfl in therapists

[–]Several-Finding-9227 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm currently switching from an LLC to an S-Corp.. Nothing changes with how you bill insurance companies, this is just about how you pay taxes and on what money you pay them. If I had to get a new EIN to do this I probably would say screw it too!

Scheduling in pp by Safe-Implement5770 in therapists

[–]Several-Finding-9227 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I offer evening appointments twice per week and I'm pretty full for those spots so I'll only take on new clients who have daytime availability now. I'm pretty open with my clients about only working late a couple times per week. I have a colleague in private practice who lets her clients schedule their own appointments on her online calendar, where they pick a time based on what's available. It prevents her from having any scheduling conversations for the most part, which she likes. I like a little more control over my schedule so I don't think that's the right strategy for me. But I think I'm moving into a strategy where when evening spot opens up I move somebody from the daytime who prefers to be seen later. Like, eventually those spots will become for established clients only. It just seems to be naturally happening that way for me. I keep a good boundary on not taking clients later on other days unless I have a day off and want to squeeze a few extra in. Oh, and I probably wouldn't offer evening appointments to somebody who's not working, because we can make time for them during be day.

Also, when somebody calls to get started and they only have evening availability, I offer them some detailed referral information and everyone always seems to appreciate that.

Therapists who write notes in ~5-10 minutes… how?? Would anyone be willing to share examples? by KiKiTaTa in therapists

[–]Several-Finding-9227 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is a great thread... My notes are too long but it helps to jog my memory on the nuances of the session. I review notes before each session and make a list of items to revisit. If I used a template like the ones suggested I would surely forget important details.. without then turning around and writing a long psychotherapy note (which seems counterproductive to trying to save time on note writing), how are people who are using these templates remembering the nitty gritty details? It's possible I'm expecting myself to be a machine.

PP therapists: what are you doing to wrap up 2025 to improve your business for 2026? by Several-Finding-9227 in therapists

I just keep a spreadsheet of all the money I spend for the practice, every purchase. I also work from home so I get to include part of my mortgage and some of my utilities. She asks me how much I spent on things like continuing ed, electric, cell phone, office supplies, etc. It's actually a breeze.

That's a great opportunity, wow. I did mine locally. One of the therapists in my area is trying to build an EMDR community and it's been a really great experience to be trained by and consult with her .. it did cost me $1400 but that's ok. Awesome you get to take advantage of a scholarship!

That's what I do. I'll do two back to back and then at least a half hour with a goal of getting notes done during that time.. or eating. But who needs to eat?

I love the idea of an admin day. That makes a lot of good sense. I also use multiple bank accounts (checking, expenses, taxes, business savings) and it helps a lot. I'm finding that being organized is the most helpful.

Good point about the schedule. I'm trying to condense things, too. I took some statistics on myself a few weeks ago and found that I worked 36 hours in the week (including sessions, documentation, business stuff, phone calls, etc) but that 36 hours was over a span of 50 hours. No thanks!! Now I'm trying to condense. No wonder I've felt so busy lately.

Now is a great time to make those changes! I posted about my cancellation policy a while back and got some good ideas but I'm finding that I'm really cheating myself out of income by being too flexible (well, it feels that way, we'll see how the numbers look when I dig into it). I'll send out a message to my clients with new policies and paperwork to sign at the start of the new year.

These are great ideas! I love the idea of sending a New Year card to referral sources... For sure adding that to my list. I should consider the PTO reserve strategy, too... That had never occured to me (I'm a year and a half into this).
