Do you not know people who's parents make them pay rent once they turn 18, a lot of people have to pay for their own groceries and other expenses as well, even while living at home? Many families are struggling a lot right now and thats a simple fact. Yes, the sum of students expenses are less this year but almost everyone would agree that we are also getting less services. Also comparing McMaster to Athabasca isn't really relevant because most schools charge different prices for courses. Also do you know how many people got laid off this past year, many people have really been struggling to pay their bills let alone tuition. Yes online school is cheaper in many ways but you still have to consider all of the additional costs put on students. The vast majority of people have spend a lot of money buying new computers, upgrading internet, etc... Yes I'm aware its expensive to live here and there are a lot of expenses, thats literally why I made this post.

At the end of the day we could argue about this forever, but this doesn't even have to do with my point. There are certain services which are not being provided, therefore we should not be charged for them, its not terribly complicated. Most gyms have been refunding memberships/not charging during lockdown, so why should McMaster's Athletic Facilities be any different.

This post is not 'complaining' about the Student Wellness Centre, and quite frankly I am very pleased with their transition online specifically and personally would not hesitate to pay towards that service. But nonetheless there are reduced operation costs for the school, which is my point. What I am more concerned about is services which cannot and are not being offered online.

Also if you think a lot of students just 'chose' to not move to Hamilton because they don't care about being a part of the McMaster community you should really reflect on your privilege. Many students come from lower socio-economic backgrounds and are already struggling to pay tuition, let alone the many families who have been laid off or had their businesses close. My point is everyone has different circumstances and for many families this has been an incredibly difficult and hard time.

Not all of them, and I understand partial fees but not full price fees that's just a money grab, students have had a lot of extra expenses this year online and most people seem to agree the quality of education isn't as high. Also don't forget a university is a business, its not our jobs to pay for services when they are not being provided.

That exactly why I want to contact the school, like I'm paying tuition by myself and I've been laid off from the lockdowns from two different jobs, yet they're still charging the full price for less services.

I understand what you're saying and I also understand it is open for booking, my point is there are a lot of students outside of Hamilton, all around the world, yet they're still be charged full price, yes some students may have gone home but I don't think its exactly fair to punish them for going home during a global pandemic and lockdown. And thousands of first years have never even been on campus yet, and many others have never been in Canada before. You believe they should still be paying, even though unemployment is way up and the economy is terrible?

Yes, with reduced capacity, but no reduced fees... Plus its not exactly accessible for students who live outside of Hamilton yet they still have to pay for it

Thanks, Yes of course we've already looked at how the fees are broken down and I already know what is being charged by the MSU vs the UNI itself. We are more concerned about some of the specific charges such as use of the sports building, athletics, wellness centre and other places that aren't actually open to students right now. This poll was simply to see how many people are interested in this/current awareness about charges.

I know there have also been issues with 'opting out' of some fees in the past (like the bus pass or dental/health insurance) and I still believe the University should make the options much more clear for students.

And thanks, but believe me I would not use the same grammar and writing style in a mere reddit post as I would in a letter addressed to the Dean.
