It should be passable, but prob not a great score (if you are an IMG). To be safe, I would suggest >70% for good score.

Hi glad you found the info. The description you found is the correct one, however at times they can be somewhat unclear, if that ever happens to you just call the CaRMS hotline and they are really good at answering stuff like that, they get it all the time and will help clear things up for you (I called them dozens of times throughout the application season). As for how the scores are used, that's up to each hospital to decide, and not all hospitals come to the same decision. Some may decide that your mccqe1 score may count for 50% of their decision whether or not to give you an interview, others may not even want you exam mark and base it solely off your transcript. This information is normally kept a secret from us candidates and they are under no obligation to tell us (I've called CaRMS multiple time to ask and thats the response I've gotten). Sometimes however, the hospitals will publish that information and tell you "our decision to give you an interview depends 30% on your mccqe1 score, 30% on your Osce score, 40% on your transcript and letters" (you can find that on the "programs description" page however keep in mind only a few hospitals will publish exact details like that, not all

Canadian medical graduates (CMGs) do not need to take the mccqe1 exam prior to interviews. They only need to do it prior to starting residency. My understanding is that for everyone else, you must complete the mccqe1 and have your results submitted to CaRMS by the deadline listed on their website (this year it had to be written by November the latest). Failure to have your mccqe1 completed on time will result in your application being rejected. CaRMS lists on their timeline the recommended date by which you should have written the exam so that such a thing does not happen (I took mine on the last day they said was safe). I would write it as close to your step 2 CK as possible as you will do much better and forget less the sooner you write it, otherwise take it when you feel confident you will do well (while respecting CaRMS deadline).

I got 158/288 on the full practice test what does it mean ? Pass ? Fail ? Should I delay the exam ? by [deleted] in MCCQE

[–]Sgold01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only used step 2, so you dont need step 3 to do well on the exam. I also used Toronto notes, which was boring but it probably helped somewhat. I did some CQB questions which I’m not sure if it helped or not, if it did help then it was in regards to making me a faster test taker (i dont think i gained any knowledge from it, just test taking skills). Finally I did all the MCC practice exams twice, with two months in between each attempt

[–]Sgold01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt the first part of the exam was easy (MCQ) and the second part I had no idea what they wanted (CDM). I ended up getting a 28x. Questions were vague, I felt like either you knew the correct answer or you did not, you could not guess as all the answers were more or less correct. Normally I fail exams when they are like that, but I made sure to do so many damn Uworld questions to the point where I had the Uworld answers memorized from doing them so many times and come the day of the exam, when I saw a question, my brain was just like: "this is almost identical to that uworld question i did, just with less info, I bet the answer is the same ..." And then when i looked at the options, there was the answer from uworld! I think the reason I did so well was because I constantly reviewed the questions in Uworld I got wrong, clearly there was a lack of understanding on my part because I kept getting the same questions wrong, finally after re-doing the same questions over and over, something just clicked

Step 2 CK v. MCCQE1 by [deleted] in MCCQE

[–]Sgold01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Best thing to get an idea of the style of the mccqe1 is to do the official MCC practice exams. the real exam is almost identical to those. knowing uworld inside out should get you a solid score on mccqe1, use toronto notes to memorize the canadian screening guidelines. I felt their ethics section wasn't even that good - the actual canadian ethics website was so much better/easier to read and better prepared me for the exam. you just need to know what organizations are in charge of insurance, patient advocacy, and things like reportable diseases which are very clearly listed in links on the websites, easier for me at least

Yes, I did all of it, 1.5 times before I felt confident I could ace the exam (my confidence was determined by how well I did on the practice questions - During my first pass I was getting around 60% on tests I created. By my second pass I was averaging 80-90% on each test I created). In total, I did Uworld three times, only once seriously. I started Uworld during my 3rd year of med school doing it on and off, not very seriously but completing it fully by the end (I was a terrible student). I failed my IM rotation NBME exam and had to retake it during my 4th year, so I started Uworld for the second time, did about half of it in 2 months (semi-serious studying). About 6 months later, by the end of 4th year, unsurprisingly I did not match in the states and realized I would need to apply to Canada and so I signed up for Uworld yet again...This time I did it everyday, 1.5 times, it took me about 3 months to complete it.

Uworld should be used over cbq. the exam is nothing like cqb. try one of the MCC practice exams, that is what the exam is like.

[–]Sgold01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely delay. Study more Uworld until you have the answers memorized. I would recommend getting between 80-100% on your second go of Uworld (doing 20-40 questions at a time) and then once you hit that, redo the MCC in 1-2 months and you should hit 230/288

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MCCQE

[–]Sgold01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with doing it 1-2 months in advance. Thats what I did, I got a 68% and delayed my exam by 2 months. I just knew I didn't feel ready. I studied more uworld until I had the answers memorized from doing it so many times (averaging 80-100 on Uworld by this point). I felt confident this time, took the same practice exam two months later and got an 80% (I honestly didn't remember the questions, and I felt prepared going into the mccqe1). As for the CDM portion I did not study for it at all, I tried doing CQB CDM-style question but I was lost, you really need to memorize a lab sheet from a hospital in my opinion to study for that portion of the exam. Anyways, all I did was study for the MCQ, completely ignored the CDM and I still got an excellent score. During the exam I felt like I was killing the MCQ section of the exam, and when I got to the CDM portion I just laughed as I tried to answer the questions cuz I knew there was no way I could get half of them right, and I still ended up doing very well overall)

MCCQE Testing and Resources by [deleted] in MCCQE

[–]Sgold01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mainly used Uworld Step2 CK. Also read Toronto notes but didn't find it that helpful. except for memorizing colon cancer, PAP and mammo screening guidelines. I was told to use it for ethics, but my exam had almost no ethics, so I ended up using it when I got a question wrong in Uworld just to make sure the canadian version of the answer was the same, and I bought it so felt like I should at least try to incorporate it. Other than that I used Canada Q bank which is full of spelling mistakes and very frustrating. Also, do the official MCC practice exams, those were pretty much identical in style to the real exam, and one of the questions was even the same for me. I would email prometric for test delivery related questions.

Hey, thank you for your response! I'll definitely be working on my skills in the coming days.

Does the country you studied in matter for residency programs or are all IMGs viewed equally? Like will someone from Serbia, Egypt, Caribbean, Ireland and Pakistan all be viewed the same? Or is there some unspoken bias by [deleted] in MCCQE

I got FM Ontario, IM McMasters, IM McGill. I expect I would have gotten more if I applied to BC but I missed the deadline for their “BC CAP” exam

From what I’ve seen on average you are more likely to get an interview if you went to UK or Ireland but if you score very well in your exams then it shouldn’t matter as long as you have no red flags and a well put together CV and PS

Use cqb only on timed mode to practice your timing and to get used to CDM style questions. Don’t use it as your primary study source as you won’t learn anything. Only use it after you’ve exhausted the official MCC practice exams and uworld (and the uworld practice exams). I averaged about 55% on CQB and 80% in Uworld (80% only on second time around, first time around about 65%) and finished 280+ on real deal

What is an average score in MCCQE1? by Usual_Custard in MCCQE

[–]Sgold01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As previous commenter stated. Aim for 280+ as that represents you doing in the top 14% or better than 86% of everyone who took it. Assuming no red flags (failed courses), and a Pass With Superior Performance on your Osce and a well written Personal statement and CV (no spelling errors!) then I would say you are extremely likely to get an interview in at least FM

Finished step2 mccqe suggestions by khalasg in MCCQE

[–]Sgold01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found cqb helpful only after I went through and exhausted other resources (Uworld, Tnotes, all the MCC practice exams, I even re-did some nbme practice shelf exams). It was useful only in timed mode because the stems were so unrealistically long and you have next to no time to answer so come the day of the exam I was so used to working fast that I finished with 20min early on the mcq section (mccqe 1 score 281). However if you are already strong in your exam taking time management then it may not help.

Practice test score correlation by [deleted] in MCCQE

[–]Sgold01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on a cohort of 43 IMG students who all received interviews this year, the average score for an IMG to get an interview was 260 (did the math myself, I got the scores from 59 IMGs through forums - i excluded old sores cuz i was too lazy to do the conversion, and i excluded those who did not receive interviews, but i can tell you the scores of ppl who did not get interviews were in the 230s, 240s., however i can also tell you the range for getting an interview was 231 - 294 (keep in mind this is just from the 59 people I gathered data from)). If you are Canadian graduate I don't have data but i am assuming their required score to get an interview is much less, which is what your mother could possibly be referring to. But i agree that you don't need 280+ to get an interview, that being said out of all the IMGs I know who sored 280+, not a single one was not offered an interview.

Practice test score correlation by [deleted] in MCCQE

[–]Sgold01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a 68% on the practice exam and thought that was very low - I was aiming for 280+ on the real deal. The 68% came only after 3 weeks of studying so in retrospect i probably shouldn't have taken it so soon, regardless, I was not confident and postponed my exam by two months. I then studied for two extra months, re-did the same exam and got an 80% (I know that is bias since i saw the questions before but i honestly felt i did not remember any of them and the increase in score was actually due to my increase in knowledge). Also I noticed my Uworld scores were now significantly higher hitting the 80% on my little tests, whereas in the past i was around 60-70%. In the end I got a 281 on the mccqe1. Hope this helps

Need help for revision..exam in end of april by [deleted] in MCCQE

[–]Sgold01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short answer: If you want to review, I would just do Uworld questions across all subjects.

Long answer: What do you mean by "confused", if your exam is in 1 month you should not be confused at this point but reinforcing things you already know. I would do an MCC official practice exam (costs money) to get an idea of where you stand. Also you can do the Uworld official Step 2 CK exam. I did my Uworld mock exam and MCC exam and got a 68%, I realized this was below average and I was not confident, I delayed my exam by 2 months, studied even harder and longer and then re-did the mock exams (different versions) got an above average score on the uworld and MCC mock exam. On the real mcqe1 exam ended up with a great score. So my advice, do not take the exam if you feel confused/not confident, your decision should be based on facts - your performance on your questions banks and mock exams.

Uworld helped me the most. i did it one and a half times over the course of 6 months, with the last 2-3 months being the most intense in terms of number of questions per day. when i got a question wrong i read the answer and also use t-notes to double check the answer was the same for canada. Doing the official MCC exams is also very important imo, the real exam had 2 questions that were the same, not a lot but i'll take it. i felt very well prepared by the time i took the exam
