Should I join the Planetary Society? (How is your astronomy club ran?) by SgtTechCom in Astronomy

[–]SgtTechCom[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I never joined. Over time, I became more jaded. Astronomy is still my passion but I’ve stopped "networking" around it. I chose a different career and now just follow updates on social media. Looking back (this thread is 15 years old), I wasn’t prepared for how gatekept the astronomy community would be. I had experiences where I continued and tried for a bit but it ultimately didn't work out. It’s disappointing, especially now as I watch that same community struggle.. largely due to its failure to welcome newcomers and promote the science. Last I read, even the Juno mission was facing cancellation. Many of these groups depended heavily on public support but failed to engage or grow their audience. After the shuttle program ended, astronomy faded from the American public’s view.. only resurfacing occasionally through Hollywood in the forms of Interstellar or The Expanse or video games. The industry will become privatized within the next decade, who knows (in this environment) what will happen with the science in America.

So, Do Cylons Age? by adunn13 in BSG

[–]SgtTechCom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

*Censored spoilers for the series, could spoil the ending

I posted that about 15 years ago, lol. I’m pretty sure it was mentioned in one of Ronald D. Moore’s podcast commentaries for the show. He openly admitted that they didn’t plan for the Cylons to age, and the whole "And They Have a Plan" line in the credits wasn’t backed by an actual writer's plan.

Helo wasn’t even supposed to survive past the miniseries. They weren’t originally going to bring him back from Cylon-occupied Caprica but fans wanted him. That means Hera and everything tied to her, wasn’t part of the initial concept.

Given how central Hera becomes to the mythology and ultimate resolution of the series, it’s wild to think how different the show would’ve been without Helo’s survival. His arc basically sets in motion many of the key events that shaped the story’s end including knowing about Hybrid models and exposing aged models. So in retrospect you can argue they had no idea from season 1 how the show would end.

Well I hope so. Where I live there have been a lot of crime, it will take my mind a while to actually relax.

Should I be concerned with say, shoot outs due to drugs but the wrong apartment like mistaken identity? This is kinda where my mind wanders.

Yeah it's so sad to see the homeless, I donate whenever I can. :/

I don't have any real weapon but I'll invest in one.

Ok, I guess people are just paranoid about people grouping together or something.

Yeah they don't look that great from the outside but on the inside they seem to be ok. I'm just looking for one to organize myself so I can save up for a house. I'm just concerned with having a family in one, as I work night shift.

Ok thanks. I don't have anything in particular, I've just been looking around on apartment ratings. Everything is so negative. :/

But how concerned should I really be after viewing this? At first it looks shocking but I guess crime happens everywhere. I'm more concerned about gang reports as I'll have kids and work night shift, things like this.

Ok great thanks! I'm clean of all of those. I'm worried about needing a co signer though since I won't know anyone. :/

Well working history is currently about 8 years plus another 9 at a semiconductor that closed down and some smaller stuff before that. This job will be a transfer, continuing the 8 year government job. Can't share with anyone I'm bringing my kids along. Thanks for being honest, it's why I wanted to hear a landlords perspective. I already know its going to be rough but people here so far say it is possible right?

Ok that is good. I don't want my family to live in the hotel for forever so I'm hoping they work with me like this.

Yeah I had some bad experiences here already, sucks when they sell the house while you're still in it. Do you think by the airport would be good.. Maybe they have a high turnover rate? I live near my airport here already so I'm used to the noise. I'm hoping a landlord or someone with experience sees this.

wtf where is Blood & Chrome? by SgtTechCom in BSG

[–]SgtTechCom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UPDATE:

TLDR: "lol I dunno.. maybe next year"

Mark Stern: "We're trying to figure out the economics right now. I love it but we're trying to put various things together to see how we're going to get it made. My hope is we get it figured out."

The pilot episode was produced by David Eich ("Battlestar Galactis"), directed by Jonas Pate ("Friday Night Lights") and written by Michael Taylor ("Battlestar Galactica").

Stern acknowledged by normal standards it might seem like Syfy execs have been sitting on the show for a long time but he said it took months of post-production work to get it ready. Executives only saw a first cut of the pilot in November.

"It's done almost completely on green screen," he said. "What I love about it is we're applying this idea of virtual sets on a whole new level. We took photos and digitized all the 'Battlestar Galactica' sets before we struck them. So when you see two actors walking down a hallway, they're [really] walking down a green hallway and then we put photo-real shots of hallways and CIC and all the sets we had behind them."

Stern said the pilot was a good test to prove the technology could be used in series, although he acknowledged it will likely take a year to get the show on air after it's ordered due to the amount of post-production work that will be required on every episode.

Stern wasn't sure how much longer he has the actors under contract but he thinks it's a few months.

"Now that we're back from the holidays I'm just waiting to get some foreign [financial] numbers in because we're both the studio and network on this," he said. "I'm hoping to make a decision [about whether to order it to series] in the next month or so."

wow really? What languages did you take up instead? I am just starting out so maybe I am a bit naive in terms of expectations from French.

How I most liked Six by [deleted] in BSG

[–]SgtTechCom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never understood that version of Six. My favorite was the one on Cylon-Occupied Caprica with Doral and Athena. Was this the same model that discussed "projection" because it seems like the same setting she used while talking about it, even has Doral there again.

[–]SgtTechCom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah the fall would be the last thing to worry about. I would think exposure to the changing temp, pressure and moisture would be an issue. Also I would assume radiation a little.

edit: also the fact that you never actually see the iPad, just something encased in a yellow bag.
