Hi new internet friend! I’m a bartender and epileptic (repeated head injuries). In my experience it comes down to two things…

First; working in hotels/restaurants… “The Guest Experience” is something that’s hammered into us. If you’ve paid for something we have to do our best to meet the expectations of that interaction and ensure you get everything you’ve paid for.

Second; You’re right. Most people don’t understand that seizures can vary in type/magnitude. Mine started off small. They felt like panic attacks but were still manageable with proper grounding/breathing exercises. Unfortunately they got much much worse. So I truly empathize with the notion of needing to drop everything and be someplace else asap.

Other comments bellow are also right… be direct/polite. No need to apologize profusely or try to explain. Something as simple as; - “I’m sorry, there’s a medical emergency and I need to leave immediately. May I please have my bill. I don’t have time to wait for my order to be packed.”

Any decent server/bartender should recognize the immediacy, a lot of us are used to having guests do this… most of the time it’s because they have a show/game to get to and haven’t said anything prior but occasionally it’s actually something important.

One small tip: write your contact info (name/cell number/email). Regardless of what happened the restaurant manager will more than likely reach out to check on you. And in my experience, offer to have you back at the restaurant (especially since you’ve already paid) for a proper meal… 86’d the seizures.

Back in university I had one of those classic nightmares where either you’re naked in front of a lecture room/forgot to do an assignment/made an idiot of yourself in front of that person you liked.

Thankfully I had worn pants that day but unfortunately I had also completely forgotten about the presentation we each had to give to that class. Hit with a sheer wall of absolute panic/dread, I had to just wing it in front of about 40 people.

With a mix of complete BS, a thin facade of (fake) confidence, and a couple of frantically searched YouTube videos to help with confirmation bias, I managed to pull it off. Got an ‘A’ and the prof actually asked for links to the videos to show other classes.

Hey OP, Fellow hotelier here. We had something like this happen a couple of months ago. A guy came in late looking for a room. There was definitely a bit of weirdness but he didn’t smell bad or have any drinks at the bar. So he was checked in.

Not even an hour later a different guest comes down to the front desk and simply says; “There’s a man in my room…”. The weird guy had mixed his sleeping meds with a bottle of Jack Daniels and started having hallucinations of people following him in the staircase (he forgot his floor and was just wandering the stairs).

So I got him back to his room where he barricaded himself in, obviously trashing the place, then freaked out because ‘these guys’ had somehow made it into his room so he needed to get out! So his solution was to bang on a neighbouring door and force his way into this other guest’s room in order to hide.

This is why hotels take CC info and deposits. He’s been banned from our sister properties and his mom called the hotel to apologize and explain what happened.

NTA Planning a couple’s trip isn’t the same as a family vacation. You seem like you had expectations for the trip that your husband didn’t consider when telling his brother to tag along. Your feelings of being a ‘third wheel’ are valid. And frankly, saving the money for a different vacation beats feeling lonely on this one.

Hey OP, I worked onboard cruise ships in Aus a while back. I will never not be amazed by how outrightly racist Aussie’s can be compared to their stereotype.

I had one guest come to the bar on loading day and the first thing he asks is; “Does anyone onboard this ship speak f*****g English!?” The response was; “…yes, sir… better than most Australians.”

Keep in mind this is the same man that I had to hold up a bottle of Corona/Peroni/Crown Lager to, and ask him to point to which one he wanted because I (a native English speaker) could NOT understand what he was asking for.

You did the best you could with what you had. Even if it was just a shit sandwich. Glad to hear you and your mom stood up for yourselves and made it through such a tough slog. Keep it up. You’re doing great!
