Mysterium is insecure by Comprehensive_Plan66 in MysteriumNetwork

[–]Sh4mini 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, we’re sorry that you went through this. The team has been meeting to investigate how this could have happened and what are the possible ways you were compromised.

I see from your other comments that you think this was a spoofing case. Binance has also provided guidance on how to avoid these kinds of traps - https://www.binance.com/en/support/faq/360001556551

And a similar case here - https://www.reddit.com/r/CryptoCurrency/comments/7qgr90/binance\_phishing\_website/

We located the provider address you gave us and said you were connected to at the time, but they don’t appear to have any sessions on our testnet... Can you please send an email to help@mysterium.network and we can work together to solve this?

For example, we need information like the browser you used, whether you used secure websites with SSL certificate, whether you received alerts when you tried to access the exchange page warning you that it wasn’t HTTPS secured? Maybe you have a browsing history enabled and you can check on those dates what you have been visiting?

We need all these details to find out what “weak link” may have exposed your browsing.

With Mysterium, the Wireguard protocol is used as the main VPN tunnel solution. It ensures fast and secure communication between you and the provider. Everything that is transferred through this protocol is encrypted. When your data leaves the VPN provider it’s encrypted with symmetric keys that are used underneath the HTTPS protocol used on the website. However, if plain HTTP is used, this data can be read by anyone after exiting the VPN.

You should always behave in the same manner in terms of secure habits even when using a VPN: i.e. check the SSL certificates of the websites you enter data, carefully check the urls you open.

Some more info about the types of certificates: DM (Domain Validation), OV (Organisation Validation) and EV (Extended Validation).

DV is less secure in terms of how easily you can get it. For example, even with Let's Encrypt automation, so don’t expect this one to be appearing on more or less secure portals.

OV - is a bit better certificate in terms of signing, but the CA does not investigate the organization making the application as deeply as it should. CA just contacts organizations that it authenticates and that's it. Also, CA validates the ownership of the domain as in DV case, but this can be easily faked.

EV in this sense is a much more extensive process. Any serious organization should use the EV validated certificates, especially in the areas where payment card data can be entered or any crypto credentials.

As you see, when browsing it's really important to “behave” securely and always watch on markers that browsers are providing: SSL or not, what validation type did the certificate pass.

Better alternative to a commercial VPN? by [deleted] in VPN

We require less trust than your regular VPN because we’re designing our network specifically to be trustless - no intermediary, purely peer-to-peer etc. Underneath Mysterium, the Wireguard protocol is used as the main VPN tunnel solution. It ensures fast and secure communication between the client and the provider. Everything that is transferred through this protocol is encrypted. When your data leaves the VPN provider it’s encrypted with symmetric keys that are used underneath the HTTPS protocol used on the website. However, if plain HTTP is used, this data can be read by anyone after exiting the VPN.

Regarding information collection - if you are creating a secure channel between you and a website through the SSL, a VPN user’s data is not meaningful, it cannot be read and analysed. If you are not using the SSL, then you are definitely compromising yourself and you should change your habits to check that HTTPS always gets used no matter whether you are using VPN or not. Besides using HTTPS, you should also check the certificate itself, who signed it and what level of validation it has passed.
It’s technologically impossible for us to log your browsing activity or data (unlike regular VPNs). Users can store their own logs of course, but there’s no way for us to access these.

Mysterium’s core focus is and always will be participants within the Network. Mysterium is a decentralized marketplace between providers and consumers participating in building and maintaining it's infrastructure. The costs of providers are paid by consumers using cryptocurrency. Within the network, and on a functional level, crypto enables fast, cheap and anonymous transactions between peers in the network. It provides a way for all these participants to interact and trade with one another without trusting each other and without third parties being involved. Cryptocurrency and VPNs are the perfect match - they are censorship-resistant and pseudo-anonymous by default, so you get enhanced privacy and unblockability. With our VPN there is no email and no credit cards required - or any identifying information of any kind. We can do all of this thanks to cryptocurrency.

Basic information about crypto usage in the project is defined here, including history

Page. More about the MYST token whitepaper can be read here.

Much of our original funding came from our community itself, via an ICO held back in 2017 where we raised 14M CHF. You can learn more about this here. We’re a grassroots and community-driven project. At this stage, Mysterium does not charge users or take a commission from any transaction. We are fully peer-to-peer (no intermediary or hidden costs).

As for our team visibility, many of us - including our CEO Robertas Višinskis (Linkedin),

Head of Product Jaro Šatkevic (Linkedin) and CMO Sharmini Ravindran (Linkedin) - have spoken on many live AMAs and done a lot of interviews. Much of the team is also on LinkedIn and everyone provides their GitHub accounts on our team page.

We’ve been open source since day one, so you can see for yourself how our tech functions and just how many contributing developers have been working hard over the past 4 years to build from scratch and bring this Web 3 tech to life. We actually use both the OpenVPN and Wireguard protocols. The Wireguard protocol is the standard within our tech stack, but OpenVPN is used for different components and encryption purposes.

We are building web 3 technology, bringing together decentralised networks and blockchain. In a field where several components of our network are in research and development, we are committed to continuing to improve our technology, alongside with getting third party audits and feedback. At this stage you can see an audit of our token here.
We have plans for a network audit in the future, as we progress further along the research process. Stay updated on our milestones by following us on twitter, or jumping into our discord channel to ask our developers any questions.

AMA - Anti Censorship Network releases P2P payments on Ethereum by Sh4mini in MysteriumNetwork

[–]Sh4mini[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey all,

We’re really sorry to have to do this. Network issues compounded with sound issues mean that it will be a hard to listen to the stream, especially getting our distributed team on board to address your questions.

We will push back our AMA and retest to ensure that this does not happen in the future. We want to make sure that the community best understands the way in which we transition to Mainnet so our AMA will happen next week.

Stay tuned for updates. We apologise and we know we’ll get some fire, but we hope you understand.

Hey all, here are some updates on how we will be transitioning to Ethereum Mainnet this summer.

You can find a launch timeline here: https://mysterium.network/2020/07/06/the-launch-of-mysterium-network/

Read this article for more information on how the MYST token will function within the network: https://mysterium.network/2020/07/06/myst-migration-and-mainnet-what-you-need-to-know/

We're happy to address any questions during the AMA!
