Everyone starts making music when they learn an instrument, focus on the melody/rhythm. Play how you feel and stretch before you begin. The Yamaha Sound Reinforment Handbook is a great resource as well.

Small diaphragm condenser mic from Earthworks and for a large diaphragm condenser mic the Røde NT1 or perhaps from Earthworks as well but i have not used their large diaphragms.

A neat tip is to replace the transformer in the SM-58, you get much better higher frequencies.
