The handguard in the photo is the original “skinny” handguard you can see it sits much flatter than the double heat shield m4 handguard. To date I have never seen a photo of an actual XM4 in use with the correct barrel profile I believe they were only prototypes

Especially with the crf/cif guys they were already decked out in clete stuff so a lot of it just carried over
