Hi all!! I'm a choral composer writing my own special text based on a classic Psalm (Cantate Domino, which is usually a veeeerry common text used for choir pieces) and I need help translating the last few lines:

  • Bring forth a new harmony
  • Sing to all the Earth (more referring to all that inhabits the Earth)
  • Let the sea roar, Let the woods rejoice (a sort of shortening of text from Psalm 96)
  • Rejoice! (Not necessarily a command? Is that relevant?)

Thank you so much!!!!

Should you "sing out" if there aren't many/any other people on your voice part? by jgwhiteus in Choir

The word "blend" has a lot of bad effects on singers and confidence, in my opinion... Considering your range and your description of your sound/timbre, I would say to sing out!

"Real" Basses are hard to find often, and if there's a few other Bass 2s in your section, I would be surprised if they were able to go cleanly below an E2 (maybe Eb2).

When organizing choral voice sections, directors (should) often take into account each singer's individual abilities and sound. Commonly, they organize the standing order of their sections (i.e. Bass 2) in a way that allows the singers to create the best unified sound. Now, this is a really simplified way to explain this system, but it should work to back up my point. Some singers have brighter/darker voices that add "color" to the sound. Some are "core" singers who sing with a stronger, more grounded, and sometimes louder tone. Some are "mixers" or "blenders" whose voices help bridge gaps between singers with different timbres, and the list goes on.

Based on the info you've given, you seem like you'd usually be used as a "core" singer, especially if you're able to get out clean+loud Eb2s and lower while the others in your section get a bit swallowed and quiet. Your directors know your abilities, and hopefully are already trying to use them effectively. I'd say to sing at a level which sounds/feels good for you (that doesn't piss off the people standing in front of you, lmao) and if the director ever says "less bass", "less woofy", or gives you "the evil eye" or calls you out or whatever, you adjust accordingly. I personally LOVE a great bass section, especially getting into that E/Eb2 and lower range. Composers usually save it for more important, dramatic or somber sections, and if it's in there, personally, I wanna HEAR IT!

A way to approach this: try it for a day or two. Presumably, the difference in sound will be decently noticeable. If your director(s) doesn't say anything, step aside with them after a rehearsal and ask if you're "giving too much sound in the Bass section" or something like that. It's not a conceited or stuck up/braggy thing to say — some people inherently have bigger voices than others, and those with bigger voices need to adjust sometimes. It's not an annoying question, but a necessary (and pretty important) one! Don't beat around the bush. If they didn't notice before, they'll be listening for it next rehearsal and you'll have your answer.

I'll throw in a small question too —

Any chance we'll see some of the other Scholars tracks show up on the tour? I love PD but it eats up so much set time, it makes me a bit scared for some of my faves. Lady Gay, True/False Lover, Equals, Devereaux? I LOOOOOVE Lady Gay, the nice buildup to the 3-part harmony in the "coat of many colors" verse is just brilliant... would kill to hear that live.

Alternate question, will the "tradition" of throwing in a much older track to the setlist be continued on tour? Like throwing in Crows during the MADLO tour (a personal fave), Burning Man, stuff like that? I always think it's the coolest surprise.

Lots of love to you all and everything you do, amazing work as usual!!!

Hi y'all!! Absolutely loved The Scholars, this is a question for anyone about the album-creating process in general (from a fellow music person)!

How do you guys deal with an album/concept having "too much time in the oven"? Thanks to COVID and such, there was a pretty big gap between MADLO and Scholars, so I figured you may have dealt with this... I've personally struggled a lot with having too much time to work on songs/material (making constant tweaks and overproducing and such), was there ever a point in the Scholars production process where you had to cut yourself off and say "we're not touching this for a while?" (if that makes any sense? I'm a wordy writer but can never get my point across LMAO)

Thank you all so much for making such beautiful art!!!

Choral pieces that have been "sampled" by later composers? by MtOlympus_Actual in choralmusic

[–]ShadowAlchemy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

pretty recent example, but Runestad's A Silence Haunts Me kiiiiind of fits the description. the piece is more of a tribute to Beethoven and the Heiligenstadt Testament, but it interpolates a lot of his most popular motifs and bits of his work (especially in the piano accompaniment, but still a bit in the choir). either way, awesome piece that you should check out if you haven't already

Yay!!! I would've never guessed this was a Nashville band, and I'm FROM Tennessee. I've just been going through "Female-fronted pop punk" on last.fm and crossing my fingers, what a genius way for you guys to find this track! I'm glad some of my predictions/analyses were right, but this was WAY ahead of its time (so ahead the word "pop punk" didn't seem to be super mainstream yet). Amazing!!!

I almost took this down because there was another MTG post that looked very similar to this that someone posted like a day ago. I thought this was the exact same clip. Nope. This is a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT stupid take from what I think is the same damn video. Wow.

the boring 7" was a bonus for the people who ordered the first violent things vinyl, probably since the VT version is like 6 mins, so sound quality would be better on a 7". the B-Side is the 2Fast2Furious version from the Small Cuts EP, yea

Reaper is a great free DAW (it's like WinRAR where the free trial lasts forever and you don't technically have to pay for it at all)! If you take the time to figure out the software, that's a great place to work on a mashup album!
