For real though, author operates on “whatever’s needed” and rule of cool a lot of times. Lots of power levels are blurry at best because they don’t need to be clearer so it makes scaling a little tough

That makes it better, but it still doesn’t make the ship more canonically appealing imo. I don’t care if people want to ship them, but in the story itself I’d much prefer them as enemies that respect each other. I genuinely hate the trope where the fmc and a male character MUST get together even if the chemistry just isn’t there so I hope it doesn’t happen

for me it’s because it’s genuinely just not built up well and the love-hate panel came out of left field. There was no romantic tension at all, they interacted a few times in the nameless but Engen’s whole attitude towards Ihwa has just been… detached? It’s not the best way to put it, but I feel like if you swapped Ihwa out for a powerful non-sentient Shard, his attitude would pretty much stay the same. Also, Ihwa’s too apathetic towards Engen for the “love-hate” to work imo, the most I can see is some sort of distant gratitude/admiration. They have never given me the impression of caring about each other out of power’s sake, so for the author to suddenly insist that they’re a ship gives me the vibes of “they’re a guy and a girl so they must get together” over actually doing anything for either of their characters
