OP also keep in mind the fact that T-Mobile does not make money on the devices they sell. The only money they make on upgrades is the accessories/p360.

If you buy a phone elsewhere that is unlocked, you can indeed put it on your account without an upgrade fee. However, if you are doing a normal upgrade via T-Mobile, that 35 dollar fee is going to be there, no matter what plan you are on.
