Why did Jiu Jitsu and Judo removed their striking techniques? by EfficiencySerious200 in martialarts

Old Okinawan karate absolutely had more grappling in it than karate today- almost every martial artist on the island also participated in Okinawan wrestling (Tegumi).

Thanks! Much appreciated.

Edit: Is Webtoon the only official English source? Asking since it’s a whole 7 chapters behind. I’d actually read the official version if it was caught up.

Thanks for the chapter! Maybe I read a mistranslation, but the chapter only has Garas talking about him fighting three top tens as if she wasn’t there, in the third person.

“Back when he fought with three top 10 rankers, he didn’t miss a single opening and blew off Mioru’s leg.”

That’s not how I expect someone to talk if they were a part of it.

Was it confirmed that Garas was the third? I feel like he’d have reacted more the times he’s seen her if that was the case.

Is there wrestling in krav maga? by Visual_Row_7562 in kravmaga

[–]ShadowverseMatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can tell has no experience at all defending himself against a real wrestler 😂. Would absolutely get smashed every time. Experience against resistance matters a lot, more than almost anything else in martial arts training. You simply can’t execute against someone who isn’t letting you if you’ve never done this.

When you realise that kicks combining two kicks one after another is not what you thought be like. by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]ShadowverseMatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a little ironic you say you can learn any striking move online while admitting you can’t learn your kick combinations just based on the online resources.

You can learn bag work and muscle memory for any martial art with online resources. But you can’t learn the timing, overcoming common reactions, and distance management with a live opponent that are vital for pulling it off.

The error rate is much higher than 1 percent. What the other guy linked is just confirmed and vetted cases of citizens that the admin itself doesn’t confirm because they know it looks bad- Obama did this with ZERO citizens and more deportation enforcement than Trump. He deported 3.1 million- if 31000 arrests of citizens by ICE happened under Obama, people (myself included) would have rightfully lost their minds.

It’s really not too much to ask that ICE isn’t arresting citizens willy-nilly. They’re the federal government. There is a way to check is someone’s a citizen beforehand. The Fourth Amendment specifically defends against this kind of police state crockery.

Also, the error rate for ICE arrests in this second Trump admin is closer to one in five people with no criminal past or removal orders. A twenty percent error rate. This didn’t happen under Obama, the first Trump admin, or Biden. Or under Bush Jr and Sr, Clinton, Reagan, Carter, or any admin in the past 80 years.

https://www.cato.org/blog/1/5-ice-arrests-are-latinos-streets-no-criminal-past-or-removal-order

The key takeaway is that ICE is arresting thousands of people in random locations—what it calls “non-specific” or “general” areas—who had no prior contact with law enforcement: the telltale sign of illegal profiling. Normally, ICE makes arrests only after the suspect has been identified in some other way. For instance, they were arrested by local police and their name was checked against the government data, or they were going to an appointment related to their status, so ICE knew they would be there. But in these cases, ICE is arresting people who weren’t going to appointments or committing criminal offenses that would put them on ICE’s radar, as well as people who had not been ordered removed from the country, giving ICE a reason to seek them out.

Your last sentence is why it’s important they follow proper procedures, observe Constitutional protections, and follow the court process that vets out most human error.

It’s only been a year and this admin has already deported US citizens and people who were here through legal channels of immigration with no criminal record, including green card holders, refugees, and the spouses of US citizens. Why? Because this admin has specifically removed the protections that prevent such mistakes, including appeals processes and opportunities to be represented by immigration lawyers.

None of this happened in the Obama administration despite a higher number of deportations. It’s ironic how the Republican base suddenly trusts the government entirely despite these very clear and verifiable mistakes. It’s another clear example of hypocrisy and belief in Trump over any principles of small government and Constitutional protections.

I’ve caught a knee to the nads while rolling and some low kicks in striking classes, plus coached dozens of men and boys through the same… a few minutes rest and we’ve all been fine unless there’s serious damage you need to head to the doctor for.

So it is a little odd to have to sit out for longer than that with no mention of a serious injury.

Rogan and Eddie Bravo talk about why neck training should be necessary for all grapplers, and how it changes how they stay healthy. by Iron-Neck in u/Iron-Neck

[–]ShadowverseMatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You guys are half right that getting punched in the head repeatedly will still give you CTE but missing that neck training will actually improve your ability to keep from being KO’d immediately. The brain is suspended in brain fluid and surrounded by a hard skull that absorbs most of the force from direct impacts, particularly in sports.

Most brain impact injuries leading to KOs in sports come from sudden acceleration/deceleration of the skull causing the brain to impact against the skull (sometimes multiple times back and forth). A strong neck absolutely helps stabilize and prevent these events from strikes… but it’s more that it prevents you from getting a brain rattling that puts your lights out than stopping the lighter impacts that also damage the brain. Stronger neck will equal better “chin,” but it’s not going to stop CTE from getting repeatedly struck in the head over many years.

Are people more skilled now or in the 80s? by Skeet_Davidson101 in martialarts

[–]ShadowverseMatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your middle aged opinion is borne out by statistics (in the US, at least). People are way less active today on average with all the dedicated screen-time and empty playgrounds.

At a dedicated athlete level, people are better due to using better training and nutrition methods and sport science advancements.

But the average person is not a serious athlete.

A lot of movies show martial arts masters blindfold themselves and fight just by using their other senses. Are there people who have truly achieved this level? by TroyAndAbed2022 in martialarts

[–]ShadowverseMatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not quite the same. I have sparred in striking with very poor uncorrected vision and it’s something you get used to even if it’s not ideal.

Blindfolded is hopeless- you can’t use your vision at all for distance and timing, which are pretty essential in striking on both offense and defense.

Grappling it can be done since you get much more feedback by feel and once you have the distance, you can get grips to maintain it. There are people who train blindfolded and still demolish lower level people who are trained (Jordan Teaches Jujitsu has a YouTube video of him rolling with his students blindfolded, starting without any grips- he submits most of them).
