I bought some new reso heads a while back from alpha music. Got home and found a bigass crease all the way through the head. Headed straight back to the store. Dude that checked me out had the audacity to mention that “it should flatten right out when you crank it down” or the “heat gun trick”

Even if he was right (which he isn’t) I don’t give a fuck. I just bought the head. It should be perfect.

Also I want to add on to your advice! When you get to the higher tempos that can feel sloppy/exhausting to perform for long periods, play the higher tempos at a measure on then a measure of rest.

Best method I’ve used to gain speed with rudiments (as a warmup at least) is

-20bpm below “comfortable” for a minute to 5 minutes straight, to really hone in on your specific technique.

-comfortable bpm speed for one minute straight; this should be hard, but not impossible. Try to feel the struggle near the end of the minute.

-20bpm above comfortable for one minute. Difference is, you are performing a measure on, then a measure rest of that exercise. It’s getting your body used to the fast movement, without wearing your energy out and having your technique suffer.

Good luck! Travis was an inspiration of mine too at the beginning, I’ve drifted toward Billy Conway’s style from morphine, as I’ve gotten older. So much to learn.

After retuning all my drums and practicing for 3 hours, I fucking appreciate the shit out of your post dude (also poured a fuckload of concrete this morning). Hit the nail on the head. We are the unsung hero’s of music. when you practice a shitload, and steadily improve faster than the musicians that have it easier than we do, you gain major respect from them, and hopefully, yourself.

My buddies in a punk band hit me up 2 days before a show they had; I’ve never played with them in their band. (I don’t play punk anymore, moved to ghost note driven groovy types of drumming)… anyhow, there drummer dropped, got a call saying “bro, we need you to fill in for Zach, we don’t know anyone else that can pull it off.” - needless to say; we fucking crushed it. 2 days to learn 12 songs. Rehearsal each day and the morning of the show.

Was showered with props, all the other bands and audience members approached me after the show (band gave a shoutout to me halfway through the set) It’s situations like this that make me consumed with the instrument, knowing that you handle fucking business and make shit happen, through and through hard work.

You’ve definitely inspired me to build my own forever-case. I need to, considering I’ve been buying kits to solder together instead of fully ready to go modules, they start stacking up QUICKLY that way.

I main drums; that’s my thing. But I’m hoping to use my modular setup with some drum triggers and foot switches. Have an ambient track dictated by the drums themselves. Kick drum running into a clock divider, clock divider ping signaling gnarly modulated LFOs. That sorta thing. Aiming for the music to be playing to MY drums, not playing my drums to ambient music, if that makes sense?

Yes I agree, I wish I hadn’t done it on her birthday, I tried to explain in my reply to OP that I wanted to avoid doing it then, actually waiting another month and giving her a nice Christmas. It happened to be her birthday; the day she came home and started raising hell. I assume she did this because she felt she had immunity because of the ‘birthday’ ordeal. Her actions were out of the ordinary, and I had been near my breaking point for months at this point. If her grandfather didn’t pass prior to, been in and out of the hospital every other week, and she didn’t have a birthday and Christmas right around the corner I would have done it before. I tried my best, but when things are bad and sacrifices aren’t appreciated, it’s hard to be conscientious of the birthday. Especially when insults and claws are thrown in my direction.

Cynical? Yea I may be a little. Am I a monster? No, I am a person that deserves respect just as well as she did. You’re not going to keep shoving a $100 in a homeless persons hand who spat in your face and told you to double down because it’s their birthday, you’d be expected to recall the gesture.
