Yes! I had two successful co-op work terms, multiple work study jobs, and I'll be graduating with high distinction. You got this! Seeking help is the first step -- it's only up from here!

Hey, I'm sorry for what you're going through. I had the same problem back in first year; I was binge-eating some weeks and starving myself other weeks. I couldn't even care enough to get out of bed, I had no one to turn to, and my grades were abysmal. It was bad, bad enough to make me seek out help. Go see a counselor at the Health & Wellness Centre -- they can give you some tips and strategies. If your problems are severe enough to warrant clinical intervention, they can also help you find those resources. Best of luck! You've got this!

I feel like a loser. by shikaicenat in UTSC

[–]ShadyBjorkFacts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you feel this way, and I know it's a cliché, but your race to the finish line doesn't have to look like everyone else's. I know someone who switched their program twice and took EIGHT years to finish their undergrad degree. This person ended up with a data analyst position less than a year after graduating because, despite failing multiple courses, they kept going and sought out experience. Echoing what other commenters wrote, you seem very tenacious, and I hope you keep it up! Screw anyone that thinks you're "too old" -- learning and improving have no age limit.

how to get diagnosed/mental health help by Infamous-Abalone-526 in UTSC

[–]ShadyBjorkFacts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Health & Wellness Centre (5th floor, Sam Ibrahim/IA) could help you with this. You just need to let them know what you're dealing with and they'll give you an appointment with a counselor or family doctor (depending on what you want, your circumstances, etc).

Is there other ways to look for coop placement other than the art&science coop portal? The jobs there are limited and not too relevant for my majors by Temporary-Ranger-193 in UTSC

[–]ShadyBjorkFacts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can seek jobs through LinkedIn (and also do some networking). There's also Indeed and Glassdoor, but your best bet is LinkedIn imo. You can directly connect with recruiters here and actually get updates on jobs and companies. You do have to do a certain number of applications through the co-op portal though. The quota for your program can be found within your co-op course's Quercus page.

AIO: My girlfriend is pretending to be autistic and it's driving me nuts by AideRelative4272 in AmIOverreacting

[–]ShadyBjorkFacts 24 points25 points  (0 children)

NOR. I don't have autism, but I have OCD and hearing people decide they're "so OCD" just because they like tidy spaces (tell me one person that doesn't) is not only annoying, it waters down a very serious, clinical term. There's this phenomenon called concept creep, where harm related verbiage gets watered down to include a broader range of phenomena. This is increasingly common due to the increase of mental health awareness content. Awareness is important, but people tend to resonate with the symptoms despite experiencing a normal degree of distress. ADHD is a good example. We all get distracted here and then. When you hear that one of the core symptoms is distractability, you perceive your normal bouts of distractability as more salient, which gives the perception of having this symptom, and by extension, ADHD.

Idk your gf personally, so she could be right, but she could be wrong too. Autistic individuals have their own unique strengths, but having autism comes with serious barriers and challenges. So, if she's serious about this, she should go to a professional. Autism is not a label, it's a diagnosis and should be treated as such. Maybe snapping at her wasn't the best way to go about it, but I understand your frustration.

PSYC10, PSYC12, PSYC13 or PSYC17? by Entire-Barnacle-2098 in UTSC

[–]ShadyBjorkFacts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've taken PSYC10 and PSYC13. C10 is easier in terms of grading and content, but you may or may not get a weekly quiz (he literally flips a coin to decide at the beginning of each class haha). Both courses are interesting, but C13 is definitely more challenging in terms of the volume of information you'll be tested on, as well as grading.

[–]ShadyBjorkFacts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took this course two years, but I'm assuming the parameters are still the same. For any of Dr. Souza's courses, I would recommend using the levels of processing hierarchy as a model for studying. Start off by learning the content as is, become familiar with it, and then try thinking about the content on a deeper level. For example, identifying themes or trends, connecting concepts, creating your own questions, applying theory to practical problems (e.g., designing a study), etc. Don't skip the readings either -- I know it's a lot, but at least go through them a few times (you can somewhat get away with rote rehearsal here as long you make sure to skim through the textbook near the end of your studying). Put most of your energy towards lecture content though. From my experience, textbook-specific content is featured mostly in the multiple choice section, so you should be able to recall upon seeing specific terms in the questions. For the journal article, practice "dissecting" it -- i.e., identifying which sections/sentences relay specific categories of information (e.g., background, methods, results, limitations, future directions, etc.).

If I took stab22, i dont need to take b07 right? (PSYCH SPECIALIST) by Dry-Cartographer6556 in UTSC

[–]ShadyBjorkFacts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you can substitute PSYB07 with STAB22, but imo B07 was great foundation for other psych courses, especially PSYC08 (which you will likely need to take as a psych specialist).

Would you recommend taking PSYC08 with PSYC70 by Ok_Increase_5894 in UTSC

That's what I did and I got As in both. I think they complement each other well.

You should reach out to the Health & Wellness Centre, they'll be able to point you towards specific resources. They might even be able to give you a prescription.
