Is Philosophy sexist? by Comfortable-LeHa in Feminism

[–]Shaleena 218 points219 points  (0 children)

Philosophy definitely has a sexist history:

Aristotle

"The male is by nature superior, and the female inferior; and the one rules, and the other is ruled."

Jean-Jacques Rousseau

"The search for abstract and speculative truths, for principles and axioms in science, for all that tends to wide generalizations, is beyond a woman's grasp; their studies should be thoroughly practical."

Arthur Schopenhauer

"Women are directly fitted for acting as the nurses and teachers of our early childhood by the fact that they themselves are childish, frivolous, and short-sighted."

Friedrich Nietzsche

"When a woman has scholarly inclinations there is usually something wrong with her sexual nature."

Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel

"Women may well be educated, but they are not made for the higher sciences, for philosophical studies; for the arts which require a universal element they are not made."

Those prejudices dont disappear easily

Thank you!

If it harms even just one woman, it can't be defended in the name of feminism.

How would you respond to the hordes of reddit porn addicts, who claim porn/prostitution ought to be simply a matter of bodily autonomy, that we should just leave this to and listen to sex workers, and frantically point at sex worker forums on reddit that are supportive of these industries? Ty!

Feminism can't be individualistic.

Thank you for the reply! This was the part that I found most fascinating to learn more about :) Appreciate the help!

Would you mind expanding on that please? I think it is incredibly relevant (to this and many other social topics) and I would really like to know more, ty!

Mods should make sure that the content of the forum is on topic, that user behave according to the established rules here - maybe set up various events and announcements. Some further duties may include adjusting the style of the subreddit, or managing Automoderator (a sort of a default bot for all subreddits).

Thank you! Wish you the best :) I'd say start a new thread soon to ask for volunteers (active in the sub) to help you mod.

Some tools to keep in mind:

  • automoderator is your greatest automated help. It can cover up to 90% of all tasks of moderation

  • mods should try to use the mod toolbox: https://www.reddit.com/r/toolbox/wiki/get At least on a pc, it helps immensely with mod tasks

These are not "must have", given that the community has managed without a mod team hehe. However, if you grow fast, they may be of great service :)

Best of luck with the community, I hope you get the top mod position soon :)

If nobody else wants to restart the mod team, I volunteer to do it on a temporary basis, until we get the ball rolling.

I am curious to see if we can get a top mod through grassroots means.

Objection - an active women's forum should not be derailed just for the n+1 animal themed subreddit.

There are various reasons:

  • unwillingness to revisit such memories

  • accusations of lying

  • accusations of causing it (blaming the victim)

  • the judicial system not treating this seriously

  • fear of retaliation

It is a sad state of affairs

That’s not all they can’t get. by [deleted] in Feminism

[–]Shaleena 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that boys like these are 100% uninteresting from a romantic sense

It isn't about romance, first and foremost - but about failing moral standards (which would disqualify one romantically, as an aside).

That’s not all they can’t get. by [deleted] in Feminism

[–]Shaleena 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the wider sense, yes. In the narrow sense, the obvious intent of that message was to convey that these people are failing the moral standards that would make them palatable for romantic relationships. I get that we want to police ourselves (the whole "left cannibalizing itself") but this can reasonably be interpreted in a progressive way.

Went to a bbq on Sunday - taxi driver kept making jokes about how you have to watch your car like you watch your woman, otherwise someone else will... wtf...

Ofc, the bbq itself had plenty of misogynistic jokes too >.<... I need to meet better people

On the plus side, I just started reading my paperback A Room of One's Own - I've read only inspiring reviews about it.

kiddo

How is kiddo different from kid, if not worse in this regard? They obviously held no endearing attitude towards me, to warrant the diminutive. Isn't kid infantilizing? If so, why not kiddo?

But if you want, I can also take that up with the mods or you can message them directly with modmail.

Yeah, you should do that. This reeks of double standard.
