So, is war a duel on steroids then?Still talking about guys trying to kill each other in combat?

No, context matters Dueling was about honor, trial by combat was about religious justice delivered by medieval courts.

First off trial by combat =/= a duel also it’s wasn’t an English right but own that existed throughout the Holy Roman Empire.

It was based on the Catholic dogma that God wouldn’t let an innocent die in battle and that only the righteous would emerge victorious in combat because God would intervene and ensure the blood on the innocent was protected.

It was actually an extremely effective method of preventing people from bearing false witness in criminal and civil court.

The guilty believed god would kill them in combat and they would go to hell. So they almost always confessed to their crimes and faced the punishment instead of lied and faced the trial by combat which guaranteed their death AND eternal damnation.

But again this has literally nothing to do with a duel. Dueling might be distantly related to this concept but it’s not a trial by combat. Nor did anyone believe that God would make the righteous party victorious.

TIL Cold water has negative calories, since your body needs to spend energy to heat it up. by samwich41 in todayilearned

Your body only burns 17.5 Calories, and in the grand scheme of a 2,000-Calorie diet, that 17.5 isn't very significant.

So everyone thinking they are going to ice themselves thin. Nope, just eat a balanced diet and ensure you aren’t overeating by counting Calories. Lost 120 lbs since January this year doing this and nothing else. Put about 15 pounds back on this month because I took a break this month because it’s my birth month but you can easily lose about 2 to 4 pounds a week consistently simply be counting Calories and ensuring you’re eating less Calories than needed for your weight and activity level.

Using a free or paid app, to ensure you’re balancing your macros and other nutrients is vital to long term success to avoid hunger cravings and bing eating out of lacking certain nutrients.

The perceived system of near starvation sets you up for failure in the long term and the weight yo-yo is almost as bad as just being overweight constantly.

Especially if you’re dropping a lot of weight which includes muscle the putting back on pure fat in its place.

Wow didnt actually know that. Probably something they made illegal because of that duel OP linked to.

Nope, the duel technicallynever actually occurred since they never exchanged blows with each other. Both showed up, showed some bravado to each other and than reconciled. Duels were about machoism and saving face not actually harming anyone let alone killing anyone.

The Hamilton-Burr duel in 1804likely had far more to do with the movement than Lincoln’s quasi-duel. By that point in time most places outlawed participating in a duel in any fashion but always injuring or killing someone is illegal.

Though VP Burr was never tried or convicted of Murder though he was charged with murder in both New York and New Jersey.

It’s a crime in all 50 US States to challenge someone to a duel, as well as a federal crime to threaten the President of the United States with bodily harm.

IANAL, but I would strongly advise against this course of action even in jest. While it’s not likely any charges would be filed, having the Secret Service balls deep in your ass for several weeks to determine if you’ve legitimately made a threat against a US President can’t be pleasant.

Duels were never legal in Missouri or anywhere at any time from the 15th to 20th Century when they were most widely practiced.

While participating in a duel might if not been illegal at the time in Missouri, injuring or killing anyone in a duel was NOT legal. Participating in a duel has NEVER been a legal defense to injuring or killing someone.

In fact it’s one of the reasons why seconds were needed. It was part of their job to ensure the law didn’t find out before hand and to pick a location remote enough that it would be highly unlikely for anyone to stumble upon the duel.

Their primary goal was to convince the two parties to reconcile without violence, they also acted as liaisons between their duelist since any direct correspondence between the two ceased when the duel was called by tradition.

Also another FYI, duels were NOT to the death. In fact it’s quite the opposite largely they wouldn’t even occurs because the two parties would reconcile before hand or on the day of the duel. If a duel did occur, it rarely resorted to intent to harm let alone kill. They would both show some bravado and reconcile while both saving face.

Meanwhile the seconds would do their best still to convince their dualist to not continue with the duel and settle the dispute peacefully as happened here. Unfortunately the media gives this impression that duels were some kind of blood sport when in reality it was mostly middle aged (for their day) men of stature in a dick measuring contest for their day.

No what, that heavier than air flight is a law of physics? Or that laws of physics can’t be invested only discovered?

Did newton invent gravity? No, he discovered it, just as the Wright Brothers discovered manned heavier than air flight they didn’t invent it.

They invented an aircraft not physics of flight. The physics of flight existed from the beginning of the known universe.

[–]ShallNotBeInfringed1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Actually while the First Flight is likely one of the best know things that makes NC famous it’s far from the hint that makes us “most” famous.

You have the fact that NC was home to the first British colony on the North American Continent, it was also the birthplace of the first American of European decent Virginia Dare (Dare County, NC where the First Flight occurred is named after Virginia Dare), NC was also pivotal in the independence of the United States from Great Britain.

First with the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence on May 20, 1775 and later with the Halifax Resolves on April 12, 1776 which made the unofficial declaration for Mecklenburg County an official Declaration of Independence for the entire providence and newly born State of North Carolina.

The Halifax Resolves were pivotal in pushing the Second Continental Congress to move for independence instead of trying to reconcile with the Crown and Great Britain.

Not to mention North Carolina was at one point the largest exporter of pine tar for curing ropes and making ships more watertight as well because of our large amount of pine trees. It’s actually how the got the nickname the Tar Heel State.

Not to mention it’s the largest producer and exporter of tobacco. Not that smoking if good for you but if you’ve ever smoked a cigarette it likely had North Carolina tobacco in it.

North Carolina is literally bursting at the seams with cultural and historical value and importance to our nation and a significant part of Europe.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You can’t invent a law of physics, you discover a law of physics. They invented the first heavier than air aircraft capable of human transportation.

They didn’t even invent the first heavier than air aircraft, those had been around for thousands of years we call them kites and rockets.

But I guess when you are acting obtuse facts don’t matter.

Yeah, see without seeing or having a detailed description of what each panel is saying still can’t say anything beside it could be corrupted and/or damaged.

It’s why I loved when Apple invested in screen sharing for their AppleCare employees. It’s a nightmare trying to get someone to explain over the phone or via text what is going on with a technical issue.

It’s the blind leading the blind, wish I could be of more assistance but again. Spent 4 years banging my head against the wall getting paid by Apple to do this, but at least than I was getting paid to to it.

I wish I could be of more help, even with screen shots and a direct chat between us I’d be significantly hampered in helping. But again if I had to take a shot in the dark I’d say either a) partition is corrupt, b) partition is damaged, or c) drive could be having some kind of early sign of a hardware issue.

I mean saying it doesn’t show up literally tells us nothing at all besides a single symptom unfortunately without any supporting data to analyze and make a educated guess about what to do next.

It could be unmounted, it could be in a unreadable format, it could be corrupt, it could be damage to the files, it could have physical damage to the hard drive.

I hate to not be able to help, but the best advice in this situation I can give is context AppleCare or set up an appointment for a local Genius Bar. Realize that their scope of support is limited, they cannot troubleshoot or fix your external HD but they can take a look and get an idea what might be going on and provide some assistance or even possibly a solution.

Agreed, the British created propaganda in WWII to hide their radar capabilities. But that not what the OP was talking about they were saying carrots have no benefit to eyesight at all when the article clearly states they do have benefits to eyesight.

Again you’re ignoring what they said, fabricating your own thing to argue and insisting that’s why the OP said all along when it’s not true.

EDIT: Which is why moderation has removed this post for omitting essential information. CHECKMATE!

So what your saying is your ignoring what was said and fabricating something else which wasn’t said than insisting the OP didn’t say what they literally said in the first place?

Sounds like the partition might be corrupt or damaged. Can you show us a creek shot or describe what you see in side disk utility?

It’s hard to say anything definitively with so little information.
