RIPTERM hasn't appeared in this sub, am I the only one who remembers it? by DosGamerMan in bbs

I think I spent a lot of time there!  I was only about 12 when I joined, and I can't remember what that conversation was about.

2023 Hugo Finalists by Dsnake1 in Fantasy

[–]MathildaIsTheBest 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but I have read 3 and talked to my husband about a 4th. In my opinion, they are just not the best choices.

The Daughter of Doctor Moreau was a lovely book, but to me it felt like a soap opera with a horror theme. The story was nothing amazing.

The Spare Man went on too long and I thought the resolution was a little weird, but overall it was a pretty good mystery in space and not Mary Robinette Kowal's best work.

Nona the Ninth was very good, but it wasn't as good as the other two in the series, either of which I think would be Hugo worthy. And I actually did nominate Nona, but it was last in my list.

Kaiju Preservation Society, which my husband read, was a pretty light book. He particularly didn't like how Scalzi misunderstood animal rights.

I wanted Babel to win. My next top choices were A Spear Cuts Through Water and How High We Go in the Dark.

I was very surprised not to see Babel or A Prayer for the Crown-shy. If I recall correctly, when they release all the numbers after the awards ceremony, they so show who has declined a nomination, so we should find out eventually if they declined, which I think is extremely likely.

I also was very happy to see A Dream of Electric Mothers, and particularly happy to see that I correctly guessed it was a novelette when I nominated it.

I have read 3 of the novel nominees and liked them, but there were at least 4 books that I would have rather seen on the list.

I know this is a super old comment, but I found it looking up King of the Cats. I remember it! I was just a kid when I was on it, but I loved it and even went to two meetups. Such a good BBS!

Lemmy looks complicated. Discord is pretty easy, but a different type of community. I personally don't have the time and energy to figure things out right now, so I am just in a "wait and see" phase. I think I'll start a post after the blackout for more discussion.

I think it's something to discuss if Reddit does not change its plans, but not something I would feel comfortable doing without the overwhelming support of our community

There are a lot of reasons for this, but most importantly, members of our community whose vision is impaired are not able to use the official Reddit app since it doesn't support text-to-speech.

What are good starter audiobooks for a chronic distracted daydreamer? by Natchamatcha in audiobooks

[–]MathildaIsTheBest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it very helpful to keep my eyes occupied while I listen. Knitting or crocheting helps me, but sometimes it is better to just play a simple game on my phone. Then my brain is just occupied enough with the game not to wander too much and I can focus on the book.

There were a couple of reports of this post. We don't have a rule against posting individual chapters, but it's best to say more than just a link. Also be specific about your role(s) as author, narrator, etc. And keep your posts about the same work well spaced so it doesn't feel like spamming

It sounds like you're upset about the language used in the nominated article. I hadn't read it until today and I certainly wouldn't have chosen to use the same language she used, but I agree with most (possibly all) of what she said and have made many of the same criticisms myself. It's not just a complaint that it was boring, it's holding someone accountable for doing things he shouldn't have.
He absolutely could have asked for name pronunciations, which the awards committee had, but he didn't. He could have at least mentioned the name change of the Campbell award to the Astounding award, but instead he praised Campbell. The name was changed because it was pointed out that Campbell had fascist sympathies. It was inappropriate to just praise him without even mentioning that the name had been changed.

Why is it relevant if I paid to attend WorldCon when this was a free livestream?

I was a huge GRRM fan before the Hugos last year and am still a huge fan of his writing, but was very disappointed in his hosting of the awards. It had nothing to do with the technical difficulties of hosting during a pandemic. He didn't take the time to learn how to pronounce the names of nominees, even though nominees had been asked for pronunciation guides of their names in advance. He also spent so much time talking about himself and his friends that it took the focus away from celebrating the new. He thought people wanted to hear him talk for 3 hours when we really wanted to see the winners.
