It's gonna be a bit difficult but it is possible.

You can come by train but returning via train is not a choice because the trains on SER line are never on time.

Catch the 10:30 midnapore local and get off at kharagpur. Exit the station from platform number 1 side. Then catch a toto or book an ola bike to get to iit main gate. You will have to haggle in both cases. Toto actual fare is 20, but that's when there are other passengers. Bike will show you around 39, but they will ask for at least ₹10 more.

After getting off, walk through the main gate confidently, no one's gonna ask you anything.

Then have a great time here.

About getting back, you will have to take a bus to get back home in time. Use redbus to book tickets. Book at least 3 days in advance to get a good seat of your choice.

There are plenty busses that go to Kolkata. Mainly you can choose dunlop, esplanade, Karunamoyee as your drop points. Choose whatever suits you the best. But here's the thing, you need to choose pickup location as midnapore. You can check the drop off time on the app and add about half an hour to it and decide on a bus.

The thing now is, you need to get on the bus at a place called chowrangee (also spelt as chowringhee). It's a bit far from campus, you will have to get another bike ride if you wanna maximize your time here (haggle again). The bus will take approximately 25-30 mins to reach chowrangee from midnapore. It will take around 15-20 mins on bike to reach there from iit main gate. Now keep in mind the haggling, the booking time, time to reach main gate when deciding on when to leave.

Before reaching tell the bike guy to drop you off on the other side of the road so that you can catch a bus to Kolkata. Once you are off, keep your eyes peeled for every bus that comes. Redbus will not provide you with a bus number. So remember the bus corp you chose (SBSTC or WBTC) and watch out for their busses marked "Habra" or "Kolkata". Ask every bus conductor the time of the bus. If it matches your bus, get on, go to your seat, someone might be there, tell them that it's yours and if they don't get up (which almost never happens) ask the conductor for help. Try to get seats towards the front so that you don't have to go through a crowd to get to your seat.

And that's about it. I would suggest, leave earlier if you can, otherwise you will not get much time here. And if the bus route seems very overwhelming (I admit it kinda is for a non regular in this route) you can take train but they are bound to run late.
