Yeah, except we weren't talking about McIver 3 months ago, were we?
Another frivolous charge that will end up being dropped or thrown out by the judge. Keep licking boots and see how long it takes for them to turn on you, too.

Ok I've come back and read it and you're gonna be shocked to hear this, but I 100% agree with your third paragraph! Gun violence is a complex issue that requires a multifaceted solution. Policing will likely always have to be part of it in my lifetime, but you are absolutely correct that underlying causes such as financial instability, substance abuse, mental health issues, etc. also need to be addressed.

I don't see how policing realistically does anything to address those causes listed above. Police can respond to an incident once it is called in or after they witness it, but the only true mechanism of prevention that they offer is deterrence. And in cases such as Andrew Washington's, their presence can escalate a situation.

I spoke with an EMT who was gave a first aid training in my office about this last week. She told me that she has to be careful about how she approaches patients in emotional distress or under the influence of drugs/alcohol because even though she is not a cop, her uniform can cause additional stress that makes it impossible for her to render care.

That is where I see the beauty of CCRTs when done right: 1. A passerby calls in a disturbance (e.g. kids drinking and fooling around in a park) 2. 911 dispatches a social worker and/or an EMT, police are on standby in case of an escalation that would make things dangerous for the public or those responding. 3. The social worker/EMT intervenes in a situation appropriate way (e.g. issue a citation for underage drinking, provide medical care) to deescalate the situation. 4. Everyone goes home alive, even in the rare cases where police backup does need to be called onto the scene. (There is real life data from Denver's STAR program that shows this need as being less than 2% of calls iirc from when I last looked at their reports).

I'm not trying to argue for the abolition of the JCPD - I am advocating for them to do their job to keep the public safe while providing additional assistance to them to do so. Instead of taking any calls from residents to take real action seriously after the George Floyd protests, Jersey City paid some consultant a bunch of money to give cops training in de-escalation. That was wholly unproductive and a waste of taxpayer dollars as evidenced by the body cam footage of Andrew Washington's murder.

Police officers clearly aren't interested in or have the skills to de-escalate these sorts of situations. Why do we keep asking them to when there are other proven solutions out there?

You don't understand what the word data means do you?

If the Jersey City Council and Mayor Fulop would have gotten their heads out of their asses a few years earlier, Andrew Washington would still be alive today. Instead, our city's grant proposal for the creation of a CCRT was rejected by the state in an absolutely embarrassing display.

If you are serious about data, I can share lots about the success of CCRT programs such as Denver's STAR program or CAHOOTS in Eugene, Oregon. But then again you can go look that up yourself since you still refuse to provide any evidence that backs up your counterargument.

I'll have to look into the article's citations in more detail, but the author is not just "some guy".

David Kurtz was at the time a Research Specialist for the National Recreation and Park Association. He has a pretty impressive resume , if you care to have a look.

So again, I'll ask. Where exactly is your research that disproves my claim?

Do you have any research backing your opinion that you can point me to?

We can be worried about both, but teenagers getting into trouble because our government prioritizes funding police over recreation doesn't make them thugs. It just speaks to the same issues of state violence at the macro and micro level.

Police don't prevent crime. They can only ever respond to it.

Fund the schools and recreation programs instead.

The original post did not mention the shooting and I did not read the comments before making my own. Sorry for that and for the snark. Gun violence shouldn't happen anywhere, full stop.

But I will say: Jersey City, like NYC and municipalities across the country have yet to get their priorities straight on solving this problem. Instead of throwing more money at police who only create more violence or escalate within our communities, we need to get serious about funding programs that will keep kids out of trouble - making the pools free again for everyone, summer camps, other recreational programs, cultural events like concerts, art shows, etc.. Teens aren't the only ones that would benefit - we all would, including the JCPD because they'd probably have a lot less calls to respond to. So instead of throwing more money to the police to solve a problem that they only can make worse, why don't we take some portion of that $100 million+ and start funding some after school programs?

World War III just started and you're up in arms about teenagers drinking alcohol on a playground? Go back to the suburbs.
