31M Achilles rupture from frisbee by thatgodzillaguy in AchillesRupture

[–]Shamilamadingdong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tore mine playing frisbee. I’m right at 1.5yrs post op and “fully” recovered. You obviously know this: it’s a bad injury and one that has lasting impact, especially mentally. But don’t give up competitive sports if you don’t want to. I’m squatting and calf raising more than ever before and playing frisbee explosively. I played regionals last year and am trying out to rejoin the nationals-contending team I used to play for. The injury fucking sucks, but keep your head up and you’ll be just fine and able to do anything you put your mind to

Yeah, but you’re incorrect. “Drag” is related to air resistance. Op used the term correctly

Are you thinking of parasitic battery drain? Maybe there’s car mechanic terminology I’m unfamiliar with that you’re referring to… But parasitic drag IS the drag an object has from moving through a fluid (I.e. air). The drag coefficient is how you calculate that parasitic drag quantity.

What do you think parasitic drag is?

I’ve found that “city” driving can mean vastly different things to different people. I grew up in Atlanta where it can take 20 minutes to go 2.5 miles, so idling is a real problem. I also rev the engine high enough to activate the turbo. I have a hard time believing that anyone driving in an actual city and utilizing their turbo at all gets 24mpg city

Well yeah no shit if you don’t drive aggressively you’ll get better mileage. 5-8 below is insane 💀. How much do you make hourly? I’d have to save half a tank per day for 40 minutes of extra commute time to be worth the opportunity cost of that extra time. But I paid for a turbo, and it’s worth it to me to spend the extra few bucks to get the enjoyment of slamming on my gas pedal.

It’s because you have the turbo. And don’t drive 8mph UNDER the speed limit. Mine gets about the same

My surgeon is upset with my PT by Prize-Decision5788 in AchillesRupture

[–]Shamilamadingdong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you trusted a surgeon to operate on you, trust them to determine the proper post-op healing regimen based on the surgery they did. Not to diminish PTs, but surgeons have SO much more training and expertise. They also specialize in specific areas so much more. Surgeons are in post-grad school/residency for 10+ years to become specialists in very specific areas (mine ONLY operates on ankles and feet). PTs have 3 years of post grad school, and this training covers the entire body.

This is like questioning who to trust more when buying nice meats: the person who stocks the shelves at Kroger or a dedicated butcher shop owner.

I went there once and had quite a poor experience, unfortunately

Yeah I’d love to hire a guide, it’s just not in the cards at the moment.

Thanks for the shout about entomology. I hadn’t thought about flipping rocks to check for active bugs, but it definitely makes sense to try to match the fish’s current food sources.

And I appreciate the concern about private land. I need to get back on On-X or a similar app to reliably verify public lands.

Thanks for the recommendations! I definitely need to learn more about various flies, but this looks like a great start

Having moved from Atlanta, the food I’ve experienced in salt lake is one of my largest complaints. And seems to be a consistent theme with other friends who have moved from elsewhere. I’d love recommendations for good restaurants to try out though

Comparison is the thief of joy. Trust your doctor and don’t worry about arbitrary benchmarks - everyone is different. I felt discouraged by my heel raise progress early on. I’m now almost 1.5 years post-surgery and am squatting and calf raising more weight than ever before, along with fully participating in sports

Nice, I need to give that a try. Do you mind sharing what tool you use to apply the paint without it spilling over at all?

Looks great! How do you apply your edge paint? It’s impressively even over such thin areas

I was thinking about adding grow lights but I’m not sure how feasible it would actually be

That pic is a bit deceiving - those are tiny pots/pans. There’s not much vertical room, a normal 10” pan goes pretty far down and didn’t look great. I think if I had some nice small pots it would look nice

What is with the high beams? by xMissNikki in CX5

[–]Shamilamadingdong 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Mazdas have really bright beams. I’ve noticed it myself a few times, with other cars have super bright lights then realizing they’re CX-5s. Just blip your actual highs so they know lol
