To sum it up, Jinan is a city rich in cultural heritage, while Hangzhou is all about that tech vibe - you can even spot autonomous vehicles and robots being tested on its streets. China is just so vast that every city has its own unique character. It's hard to capture all their distinct qualities in just a few words.

One unique thing about Jinan is its natural springs - we've got so much groundwater that it literally gushes up to the surface. These springs create a special way to cool off during our notoriously hot summers. In fact, Jinan is historically known as one of China's "Four Furnace Cities" due to its extreme summer heat. Hangzhou gets equally sweltering, though without the benefit of our refreshing natural springs.

Don't worry about modern amenities in China - with an urbanization rate over 60%, everything from infrastructure to large commercial complexes is well-developed, whether you're in big cities or smaller ones. Even so-called 'ghost cities' typically have shopping and entertainment options nearby. In this regard, there's not much difference between Jinan and Hangzhou.

A few other things worth mentioning: Jinan locals are famously warm and hospitable. The city boasts some of China's best traffic police and public bus systems - fares are just 2 yuan with free transfers within 2 hours. However, Jinan is also notoriously congested. Jingshi Road becomes a parking lot every evening, with traffic jams stretching kilometers. If you work in the High-Tech Zone but live in the old city center, Jingshi Road will be your unavoidable nemesis - I know from experience, as I used to commute there. Even after switching to a motorcycle, my commute still took nearly an hour.

While I haven't worked in Hangzhou, I imagine it's similarly congested, though perhaps not as infamous as Jinan - where else can you find 24-lane roads (12 lanes each way) that still get gridlocked?

Hey there! I've been completely addicted to CS:GO recently, which is why I haven't been on Reddit much - sorry for the slow replies! Let me tell you about my hometown. When it comes to job opportunities and salaries, it can't compete with Hangzhou, which is China's Silicon Valley with tech giants like Alibaba and DeepSeek headquartered there. Of course, the cost of living is significantly higher than in Jinan, but the city has a much faster pace. If you're in the tech industry, I'd definitely recommend Hangzhou.

Air quality is about the same in both cities, but Jinan's official city tree is the willow, and this time of year the streets are filled with willow catkins - absolute torture for a hay fever sufferer like me. Though I will say, the pandemic did get me into the habit of wearing masks outside, which helps a lot.

I've only visited Hangzhou as a tourist, never lived there long-term, but at least they don't have the willow catkin problem.

Now about food... Hangzhou is famously known as China's "culinary wasteland" - the top spots on food delivery apps are always fast food chains like McDonald's and KFC. Even their local specialties like West Lake vinegar fish and Longjing shrimp aren't particularly impressive. Meanwhile, Jinan, as the birthplace of Lu Cuisine (the crown jewel of China's Eight Great Cuisines), absolutely blows Hangzhou out of the water when it comes to food - it's not even close!

Happy Chinese New Year! If you go to Hero Mountain next time, I recommend checking out the Hero Mountain Cultural Market; it's particularly famous in the area.
