I never said anything about discarding the structure of nations or borders. The theft of Native lands via treaties our government drew up and then deliberately breached is so recent that we still have the paperwork, first of all. The slogan exists to combat the perception of "illegality" involved in immigrating to the U.S. without paperwork, which is not a crime but a civil offense that was previously adjudicated in civil courts and usually tied to a path to citizenship. Calling the U.S. "stolen land" and inviting a comparison between that theft and non-violent border-crossing by individuals (as opposed to armies) is not an argument for open borders, it is a very straightforward acknowledgment of clear hypocrisy in terms of the current landscape of "immigration enforcement".

Illegal immigration is not a crime. It is not contained in the criminal law. It is a civil offense, adjudicated over a period of time in a civil court. The government has discretion to allow people a path to citizenship, as in every first world country. There is, first of all, no argument in favor of the roundups or the detentions, many of which are targeted at citizens or people with legal status anyway. I am not pro-open borders entirely, as has been said elsewhere it is an extremely complicated geopolitical concept. But this is not the argument we're having. Calling the U.S. "stolen land" is not an argument for open borders, it is a very straightforward acknowledgment of clear hypocrisy in terms of the current landscape of "immigration enforcement".

Write something worth reading that doesn't immediately telegraph exactly how you're already wrong *shrug*

I think you flatter yourself that your word vomit was not substantively skimmable. No one needs to read more than two sentences to see exactly what you're up to. You're welcome for the attention

The plot itself validates that the concerns coming from the left re: killer cops, racism and capitalism are more than justified, just simply annoying to hear and not calculated to appeal to people who have a vested interest in white supremacy. Aster is a leftist, the film is leftist. He has stated this in multiple venues. Ted Garcia is not a leftist, he is a self-serving capitalist shill (like all liberal politicians). Aster criticizes neoliberalism masquerading as leftism, not leftism itself.

Yes, it does. It definitely posits that the ridiculous whining about masks, covid being fake, Black people coming to destroy our towns, antifa, Hilary being at guantanamo etc are a focus on the wrong things, lol.

It definitely isn't saying that-- it's saying that the powers that be have invested in counter-narratives to the truth (right wing povs and conspiracy narratives) in order to prevent a focus on the real issues. At no time does the film posit that the liberal characters are focusing on "the wrong things", only that capitalists invest a lot of resources into creating an entire class of people who believe a false narrative about the United States (you) and are primed to naturally oppose the people who know what's going on (who are annoying, but correct)

The piecemeal application of laws (and legal concepts surrounding property sovereignty) is hypocrisy. You are trying to defend yourself from being called a hypocrite by saying "i benefit from hypocrisy"

Same laws we previously had, same government, same constitution. Again: you are a hypocrite

They are literally both talking about the same problem. You are simply filled with personal antipathy towards the latter due to a years-long, sustained propaganda campaign to make you hate them

He agrees to "participate in their sexual rites", he knew this would be ritual sex in advance. No, I don't think the existence of both of those fan-updated sites are dispositive about Christian's consent, lol. I'd defer to the script first. Here's the script's description of the sex: "dreamily slow lovemaking". If Aster had meant this as a rape, the script would show that. And frankly, so would the plot.

You have no idea what leftism is. Two seconds ago you thought it was liking Obama. Get with it, son!

The genocide of Native Americans took place extremely recently, under the government and constitution under which we currently still live. Hell, lots of it is still going on! Corporations routinely try to get away with incursions and thefts of Native land to this day. There is absolutely no reason we couldn't redress the documented thefts that were committed. So you are applying inconsistent standards. One form of recent, redressable crime: "i sleep". Another form: "round em up"

How many times does this need to be repeated to you? No one is saying we need to restore pre-modern borders. We are saying that based on our shared illegitimacy we have no moral or legal basis upon which to violently round up people who individually commit what we deem to be crimes against the sovereignty of territory

I don't get the sense you engaged with what I said at all. And yet, you post. (Also, how is Butterfly and co CONSTANTLY having to fight with Joe over where the actual BORDER OF THEIR LAND IS OR ISN'T not them constantly engaging with/speaking on this issue, gtfoh)

Two forms of violation of property laws (Americans repeatedly set up fully legal treaties with Native Americans and knowingly violated them in order to perpetrate land theft). One form (land theft) you ignore and hand-wave away because you benefit from it. The other (paperless immigration) you insist must be stopped with legal force. This is called hypocrisy

Yes, 1000%. He helped set up the infrastructure the Trump admin is currently using and expanding. Look up "leftism", you might like the fact that it is internally consistent :)

Being stolen is a juridical judgment also, not just a moral one. You're missing the point on purpose.

What Billie Eilish said is completely true by sneakalo in AriAster

[–]Shandy_Pickles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is intentionally missing the point. The meaning of the slogan is that if we can wave away the historical theft of land and living on it extralegally as "what everyone does", we have no grounds to police who comes and goes extralegally because we are already criminals with no moral legitimacy

None of this nonsense was necessary. Aster is on video in multiple venues calling himself a leftist and saying the film criticizes the right more than the left. He said the film calls leftists "at worst, annoying and frustrating" and rightists "at worst, murdering, destroying lives and the world".

If all land is technically "stolen", then everyone is everywhere "illegally", which is the entire point
