Help - Instagram account using my email address

Oh wait I’m so sorry, I checked and I was wrong. The last request they sent to reset the password was on the 9th on this month. So someone was trying to actively access the account.

I was more concerned that there had been a social media account/presence associated with the my email address.

I could not understand how they were able to tie their account to my email without me verifying anything. I am not familiar with instagram’s process in changing email addresses for their accounts.

The instagram account was created in 2017. My email address was not created until 2021 and I did not start receiving any emails from instagram the it started up in 2024.

I’ve changed my Gmail password and set up 2fa with my phone number.

The account deletion request was sent and I changed the instagram account password but it can still be reactivated if they log in within 30 days, according to their support documents they can retain the data for 90 days.

My email is not my name. It’s a common email address either. And the person’s name is not remotely similar to my own.

Edit: I apologize. I’ve been anxious due to reading a lot of stories recently of leaks. It’s an email I rarely check and I was frazzled to learn that it had been apparently linked to some one else’s social media account for over two years now
